Ok

Dumb question, ive never stayed in a hostel before but i assume its just like a hotel with dorms and a more social atmosphere?

as in when you arrive you will still have to check in (or ask for a room if you havnt booked) etc..

since i will be on quite a tight budget i assume that most will have some form of kitchen area i will be able to prepare/cook/microwave food etc? is this a standard thing or is it something i should be checking before booking?

Thanks

When you arrive you check in and they give you your room key.
As for kitchens most hostels should have one but it is by no means a given-if its a concern then ask before you book.
Basically yeah, hostels are like hotels but with more people in your room and a common area.

Dumb question #2:

Im a little confused regarding train passes, im planning on getting the interrail 30 day global pass, i intend to have this start 3 or 4 days after i arrive in rome (getting a flight in, will stay for a few days)

Is this going to cause a problem at all? (having it start after i arrive)
Will they mail it to me in plenty of times?

thinking of it i am quite confused about a few bits of the rail pass, so may go start a thread over in the right forum

The 30 days will start counting down after the first day you start using it. Before you get on the first train you will have to go to the desk and get them to stamp, sign and date it.

someone correct me if I'm wrong but this is how it worked for me.

You only have to get it stamped first if you are confirming a reservation or something. Otherwise the conductor on the train will do it. You, or they, will just have to write the starting date in pen on the pass.
