Hi, I am a 23 year old female from Portland Oregon.
After visiting a friend in Lebanon I am planning on heading to Istanbul in the begining of January. I have traveled alone in Europe, and am currently residing in Egypt, yet my mother and grandmother are freaking out about the idea of me travelling alone in Turkey. So in order to put them at ease, I am calling out for any contacts or travel buddies that will be in Turkey in the begining of January.
Thanks and aloha, Tessa

I had a friend from Istanbul and she said that peoples' perceptions of Turkey are completely wrong. She said it's a very westernized country and is safe. She was studying abroad in the US last year. Anyhow, I will not (unfortunately) be there, but wish you a good and safe trip and welcome to the boards!

This is a little off topic, but how is it living in Egypt? I am super curious. I will be travelling there this summer and I am trying to find out all that I can about Egypt. I'd really like to get some insider info.

As for info on Egypt, I don't know if I am the best to refer to since I have been living a very priveledged lifestyle staying with my aunt and uncle in a rich suburb outside of Cairo. But I shall try. From what I can tell egypt is really set up for travelers that are on guided tours. Nothing is well labeled here from the temples and tombs to the museums, it is hard to figure out what you are looking at unless you have somone telling you or your nose is in a book the whole time. But with a good travel book or two, I am sure it is do-able for the independent traveler. I have not delt with hostels or public trasportation, so I really don't know what it is like. But I know that it is possible to be a hostel staying backpacker here, it is just not quite as easy as traveling in europe. Egyptians are very used to tourists, and are very friendly and welcoming. I haven't experinced any anti-american sentimate, but have had to deal with lots of attention (some negative) from the men since I am an attractive young white female. But overall Egypt is definately a place not to miss. I'm sure there are others who have traveled egypt indpendently that will have more info for you.

One thing, there are reported cases and deaths due to the Bird Flu pandemic in Turkey.

The birdflu is sort of starting to freak me out.
I'm going to be living in Istanbul from January to March, but if it gets too scary I'm just going to bail and go work on a kubitz in Israel.
I'm 19/m/Vancouver Canada if anyone wants to meet up.
cheers!
