Welcome to Travelpunk!! I have been to both places and so may be able to answer questions that you have. If I might ask, what made you select Singapore as a destination? Just curious as most people when they head to Asia will go to Thailand or Malaysia, which are considered more interesting backpacker destinations. Singapore is quite nice, but not nearly as 'foreign' from the West as some other countries in the region. If you get the opportunity, I would suggest you check out either Malaysia or Thailand for a few days as you really only need a few days in Singapore to see everything. You can easily and cheaply fly to either country from Singapore. Just a suggestion. You should have a great time on your trip. Both cities are a lot of fun.

Welcome to the boards!

^Haven't stayed at the Inn Crowd, but heard very good things. Most things in Singapore are very clean and well run and I would expect that place to be no exception.

In case you didn't know, the big nightlife areas in Singapore are Clark Quay (pronounced key), Boat Quay and Mohammed Sultan Road. If you do some searches on those areas, you will come up with some info on bars and clubs, restaurants etc. The two Quay's are right on the river that flows through town and so have a lot of outdoor seating with the city skyline as a backdrop. Not bad at all. Singapore has a small beach resort area called Sentosa that you could check out. They also have a night safari. Lot's of shoping on Orchard Road.

Unfortunately, you might have to wait for Sydney for that. From what I have seen and heard there is not much at all for decent live music in Singapore. If you find a decent place, however, be sure to post about it!

Off topic here, but the airport in Singapore is probably the nicest I've ever seen. They even have a little spa where you can take a shower and sit in a private jacuzzi while waiting for your flight!

Thumbs up I will be there!

As is stands now I will arrive in Sydney on Jan 24. I am up for meeting for a few cold ones if you still are. I will most likely stay in Kings Cross in a hostel. My plan is to stay until Feb 1, maybe a couple days earlier to go to Melbourne from there. Let me know via PM or email me at foofiter69@hotmail.com

I just got back from a trip that included both Sydney and Singapore. I stayed at the Inn Crowd, and it was a pretty good hostel. We were there for a total of 5 nights, on the first night we were in a dorm, and then the last 4 in a double (would have been in the double for the whole time, but it wasn't available).

The hostel was pretty good, you get a good breakfast in the mornings (they provide eggs, bread, and spreads until midday for free), half hour of free internet per day, and they have a lot of information about Singapore, including nightlife, bus routes, transportation into Malaysia, shopping, food, etc etc. It is right in the heart of Little India, which is a little daunting, especially if you're there on a Sunday night, when the whole area gets clogged up with street markets and hundreds of people. It's quite impressive really. It is about a 10 minute walk to two MRT (underground train) stations, but also easy to walk to lots of places, such as Orchard Road for shopping.

The rooms at the hostel are quite strange really. There are two dorms, and they are HUGE. One has about 32 beds, the other has about 20. We didn't find this to be a problem, though, as the rooms are VERY large and have lots of nooks and crannies, so you'll only ever really notice the 4 or 5 people in the beds closest to yours. We didn't get disturbed once.

The bathrooms are perfectly ok, not too many showers, but you'll never have too long to wait, and if you fancy it, you can go out onto the roof terrace, and use the open air showers (they have a couple of cubicles with no roof, which is quite funky).

Another plus is that the rooms are very cheap, especially considering you get a decent breakfast and free internet.

Anyway, I just realised you may have booked your hostel by now, but if not, I hope this helps!

Oh, and in Sydney, I stayed at the BIG hostel. The name is misleading, it's not that big! It's pretty cool though, they have a good kitchen, decent common areas, reception staff are helpful, and rooms/bathrooms are all clean and a fairly good size. Not that cheap, but nowhere decent in Sydney is really.

Location is good, about a 10 minute walk from Pitt Street (for shops and places to eat), and then another 20-25 minutes or so up Pitt Street to Circular Quay, where you can take the ferry to Manly, look around the galleries, etc.

Enjoy your trip, you're so lucky to be getting some good weather!

Also, a lot of people complain about Brisbane, but it's a great city, make sure you do go there!
