Because of lack of vehicles in the county, especially in rural areas, Hitch hiking is not only a very common means of transport, but it is law that is someone has room in their car, they are required to stop. Everyone from regular folks, to army and evn policemen on their way to work..everone does it. Its safe and actually works out really well, when I did it the longest I waited on a highway was about 20min..so it really does work. Its a great way to learn about the culure and get to know some locals...if you can you can offer a little something to your driver as a thank you, or to cover some of the gas for the trip. If your hitching to Havana, you will find it very busy on the highways for hitch hikers, you might see as many as 20 people waiting to get piked up, but then along comes a flatbed truck and everone jumps on!!! Going south from Havana is not quite so busy and should be able to get a ride without much of a wait.

There is nothing like cruzing into a city like Havana in a car like this http://www.goputney.com/images/cuba_car.jpg

What a cool law and a neat lil something to enter into a travel journal B) !

I have the DVD of The Buena Vista Social Club and it just make s me want to head out to Havana and take in this city that still seems to be left in the stone age. The NEWEST American car out there in a 1964(right before the embargo)?! I think that was the year. What a site that would be to see. I'm sure a very humbling experience -_-

As always, appreciate the tip

TP,
That law is some scary shit. That would put a real damper on your travl'n funds. Perhaps us from the US should write our wonderful president and express our distaste for such a restriction on our freedom. :nono:

For those who are interested here is the presidents e-mail address: president@whitehouse.gov
and also our vice president, the Big Dick Cheney: vice.president@whitehouse.gov :yuk:
I am sure it will work wonders, cause I am sure they both individually read each e-mail that is sent to them.

Although don't express too much distaste, or you might end up on the list and pay a visit to those concentration camps Voyd was talking about. :o

that law is pretty cool, you can toss the eurorail out the window in cuba. I plan on visiting cuba in september of 2004, anyone know how the weather is out there during that time or if its hard to get into cuba?

I know you can take a boat from cancun or merida, but is is difficult to get into cuba if your a u.s citizen? Just wondering.
