Default 3 weeks in Costa Rica

base camp is at Jaco Beach, where do I want to go from there? Interested in surfing and hiking, and I prefer low-key, unpolluted, unpopulated beaches. I will have a tent to sleep in if I find myself somewhere random. Traveling with 2 friends.

thanks a lot!

I haven't been to CR, so I just wanted to say Welcome!

Recently several members have been there so they should be able to help you out

I personally didn't spend too much time on the beach in CR and unfortunately I don't surf, so I'm not going to be too much help on the beaches. The only place I hit up was Manuel Antonio/Quepos, which definitely was not quiet and unpopulated.

For hiking, check out Parque Nacional Chirripo and you can hike the tallest mountain in Costa Rica...which I hear is a good slog. The park was pretty damn quiet when I was there.

I *did* hang out on wild, unpopulated surf beaches in Nicaragua, so I can vouch for the existence of those up north, in case you decide to head there.

I spent the majority of my time in and around Monteverde in Santa Elena. Plenty of hiking around there. Cerros Amigos at night is a blast. About 5K up the mountain, and bring rain gear!

I wandered around in the cloud forest at Santa Elena Park too (which is quieter than Monte Verde park). There are trails through the park, fairly well-marked but we didn't find anything too challenging, terrain-wise. Amigos seemed to be the only place in town, lol. I stayed at the Pension Santa Elena and the owner, Ro, is an absolute blast - and he'll give you all the advice and information you need!

Depends where you want to go from Jaco...if you want to head to Monte Verde I think you head to Puntarenas (also the spot for the ferry to Peninsula de Nicoya, although I think you can get speedboats direct from Jaco) and then to Monte Verde. If you want to get to Parque Nacional Chirripo, I think you've got to head to San Isidro (maybe via Quepos) and then to San Gerardo.

Wait, Hwei- Ro owns it now? Bought it from Ran and his wife?

The Pension came highly rec'd from Omid. I stayed there and loved it. It really is/was the center of everything in Santa Elena.

I'm actually not sure...I may be confused. Either way, he's still a hilarious chap and it's definitely a good place to stay!
