My brother just got back from a trip to Newfoundland, we have some family there which he did spend time with, but he some of the things he told me where amazing...

When they were in the bars and clubs, they did not pay for one drink

Him and his friends would get stopped in the street when someone heard their accent and create conversations with them.

The hospitality they saw was like none they have seen before, any where they went people wanted to be nice to them.

The sights and history of Newfoundland were more indepth than he could think of of, or had been taught in school.

The thought of someone trying to scam them or rip them off never even entered their mind, they police up until about 4 years ago, didn't even carry guns.

I feel so nieve for not even concidering making a trek down to "The Rock", but now I am, my next adventure will not be over seas, my next trip will be to Newfoundland on the east coast of Canada, A trip that I have not taken since I was 8 yrs old, almost 20yrs ago.

St.Johns is the largest city and they were treat no diferent than when they rolled nto a small town, EVERYONE is friendly and eager to help and meet a trav'la. Dispite being the highest taxed province, and the highest unemployment rate, this place treats their guest like gold, like family....

HOLD TIGHT NEWFOUNDLAND, I"M COMING!!!!

apparently, it is a shorter distance from Nfld to Ireland, that Nfld to Toronto. Crazy.

Sounds like tourists are a rare thing out there. Those places, in my opinion are the sa-weetess! They´re like hidden gems ;) I had the same experience in a little town in the south of France called Le Puy Envaly and in the South of Spain, Villa Nuevo Del Arzobispo. You kinda feel like a celebrity in a way B)

CincyLSD 07-14-2003 06:59 AM

pardon the ignorance, but can you drive there, or you gotta fly?

Canadian Dude 07-14-2003 07:47 AM

Cincy, where do you live???

You can drive to Newfoundland, but you have to take a ferry to get to the island Newfoundland Ferry Service

I did the drive when I was young, so I do not remember much, but ANYONE I have talked to about the drive through the Canadian maritimes is pretty frik'n wick'd

I know this is an old topic to bring up, but what the hell...

there are piles of toursts here every year, we (not to toot our own horns, hehe) are just friendly people in general. I do agree it's a hidden gem, and a lot of the people that live here haven't discovered all the province has to offer. if you're into the great outdoors (5 minutes from the city) and natural wonders, it's the place to be. great place to come party too.

hi! just to clarify, it takes about 3 hours to fly to toronto from St.JOhn's, and it takes about 4 1/2-5 to fly to heathor from here (st.john's), so I guess it would be about the same to fly to dublin. However, the crazy thing is it costs less to fly to England than it does to fly to Labrador, which is the mainland portion of Newofundland.

This sounds like a place I would love to visit, I'll keep this in mind. The place sounds cool. Can I get crack there? (That was a joke, only the crack part was a joke)

Jen05 07-29-2006 01:52 PM

I've wanted to go to Nfld and the rest of the Maritimes for a while now. Flights just seem so expensive, and I have a stupid mindset that if I'm going to spend $$ on a flight, I might as well leave the country! I love the accent there though. Now I have a new trip to consider!!

travelchick75 07-29-2006 04:23 PM

I hear ya, it would cost me almost as much to fly to Newfoundland than it would to fly to london....thats really sad, i be to every country in europe before i see every province in canada *sigh*

d_fresh 07-29-2006 04:46 PM

flights in Canada are outrageous period. it costs more for me to fly anywhere west of ontario than it does to fly to london.

travelchick75 07-29-2006 05:48 PM

It's pretty ridonkulous if you ask me... even westjets expensive WHY WESTJET WHY!!! I'D EXPECT THIS FROM AIR CANADA BUT NOT FROM YOU!!!!!!!!!!!! :crybaby:
