I haven't seen an answer to this question anywhere yet, so I've given in to just asking it...how safe is it for a lone female to camp (european campsite camping) during the fall/winter months in europe? I camped last summer alone and felt very safe, but I'm heading back again this fall/winter and wonder if I'm being unrealistic and/or unsafe. Does anybody have any experience with this? Any suggestions? Oh yeah, I'll be making my way through the Netherlands, France, Italy, Spain and Greece (specifically, Corfu)--if that changes anything. Thanks!!! p.s. does anybody know of a truly comprehensive guide to european campsites?

As long as you use common sense you'll be fine. I've camped in Italy & Spain in winter months alone (I am a guy though) and felt perfectly safe. I think the main thing is not drawing attention to yourself and such.

If you did it in the summer, I can't imagine that the risks would be worse in the fall/winter as far as threats from freaky people are concerned. ?? You'll have to have warmer clothes, of course... the only real risk I can think of is the potential for hypothermia!

I guess what my worry is is that there won't be as many people in the campgrounds as there are in the summer. I feel for some reason that there's safety/anonymity in numbers, so not as many people in a place makes me a bit nervous. But you're right, it's most likely just as safe--I'm probably just experiencing pre-trip jitters!

Well, there is safety in numbers. Maybe just make sure you find campgrounds that are in a safe place and such.

Hi juls, I have been doing camping for just over a year in Europe and love it. This site will give good information on where to go...http://www.germany-tourism.co.uk/pages/camping.html

I don’t know if you would call it “camping”, but I did sleep outside a lot in Europe and I never had any real serious problems. In fact, I will be sleeping outside again when I go to Europe next summer. Only this time, being older and wiser, I will have a quality sleeping bag, tent and air mattress.
