I've never felt the need to carry a gun while hiking, not even when I'm in bear country. I've never felt like I was in any danger in the backcounty either. I'm smart and hang my food and all that jazz.

Dave is the same way. He's a pacifist at heart, but when he had one wander into camp one evening it scared the bejesus outta him. He now prefers to play it safe. From what he told me, though, the bear mace only pisses them off, so...

But to each his/her own! :D

seriously dont waist ur cash on bear mace... most of the time all it does is piss them off. The thing with bear mace is that they just call it that because selling mace meant to use on another person is illigal in alot of places...

the main thing your really gonna need is a knife.. a real good one... make sure its full tang and very functional.... dont waste ur cash on some flashy tooth pick thats gonna break when u need it most... the other things i always bring are a spool of fishing line and hooks... plus a bag of rice.... kinda hard to find good carbs in the woods

I agree with the head lamp...best present I ever got.

duct tape is a good idea, but i use medical tape instead. you know the white stuff that holds gauze? just as strong as duct tape, but you can use it to patch your clothes from the inside (it's fabric tape) and it's GREAT on blisters. like a second skin.

last one sounds crazy, but if you think you might have a problem starting a fire because of wet wood, bring a road flare or two. They burn a long time and will start a fire on anything. Big plus if you're freezing and don't want to go to your sleeping bag yet.

My swiss army knife has saved me a couple times since I have been here. A multi purpose tool for sure.

A decent pair of scissors is handy as well and I don't have any on me. A rain coat because for the past few days it has been pissing down rain and I have been walking around permantly soaked.

-Knife
-Lighter/ matches/ flint and fire starter in a plastic zip lock
-A piece of plastic or tarp to use as a tent if it rains
-Twice as many pairs of sox as you think you need
-Romen/ Cheese/ tortillas/ potatoes
-A coffee pot
-A frying pan
-Some rope
-As for the gun I would recommend the ultra light titanium .44 magnum. It kicks a bit but gets the job done . I have done a lot of hiking in bear country and have had problems with them on several occasions. Moose, especially female moose can be extremely aggressive in the spring and early summer. I also have friends who have had problems with mountain lions one guy has the scars to prove it. (bear mace is a joke)
