*Ok, so rather than have all the climbing discussions in the Climbing Gear topic, I thought I'd take my posts to do with climbing, and not Climbing gear specifically, anb put them in a general climbing topic, also for reasons of continuity, i've taken any posts that are directed towards non-techy/gear posts and put them here*

so, yeah, i love climbing, Every thing about it, the movement, the adrealine, the Freedom, the Glory.

so i thought i'd give this topic a bump

any way, few months i've been bouldering with a friend and my sister, the climbing scene isn't massive here , but we've done the best we can. Any way it turns out Laxey Beach has some good Crag, which is much better than the eroded and weathered sea cliff (low grade spotted slate ) we've been trying to climb, and for the last 4 days i've been trying to get a First ascent on this one problem, I've managed to get afew other FA's in the area (since I was the first there and had a bit of a solo session ).
But this one Problem gets me, No overhang, a couple of jugs half way up, and 3 toe holds for the first 2 moves, then palm slaps for about 3 ft before topping out. On my third attempt yesterday (before my sister was there to spot ) I got to the half way point (my left foot into the last major hold before commiting to the last 3 or 4 ft - about 7 ft) then, i lost my focus, and my right foot, falling the 7 ft, I was fine when I landed, I wasn't when my sister got to me .

Any way, I will head out tomorow, I will take a Camera,

AND I WILL HAVE THAT PROPBLEM SOLVED

My sis started, fell, i had ago, fell, this process contiuned for a few goes, then she went, fell, but from that i noticed a different angle in the second move, I went.

13 moves later (maybe ) I topped out, all whilst wearing my TravelPUNK Tshirt. I rock, I love bouldering, TravelPUNK rocks, I Love TravelPUNK.

Hahaha, you're a crack up Rozza!!

But, speaking of climbing, i'm FINALLY starting. I'm going to do a weekend course with a climbing school in 3 weeks. Then, if i like it (i'm sure i will), i have a mate that's going to take me with him whenever he's going. Sweeeet

Nope, i don't have boots. I'll be ringing the climbing school when i get my voice back (i have a stupid cold atm) to see what they provide and what is involved. Is there anything i should ask them in particular??

The course costs $295 and goes for 2 days. Here's what their website says:
Day 1:
- The art of safe movement on rock
- efficient use of holds
- rope handling
- tying knots
- belay anchors and belaying techniques
- selecting the best abseiling & rock climbing gear
- a few climbs

Day 2:
- do as many climbs as possible

Does this sound like a reasonable course??

As for the routes near me question - hell yes!! I live an hour away from the blue mountains, there is enough climbing there to keep me amused for a life time.

Yeah, these types of courses usually provide you with all the climbing equipment such as boots, rope, harness ect. When theyou go to get your first pair of boots its probably better to go a climbing/outdoor shop rather than the internet, as you'll want a boot thats suitable for beginners (i.e. hurts alot less ) and people at the shops will be able to help you with fitting. But the newer boots are much more comfortable than they were a few years ago, and change to fit your foot much quicker.

What kind of climbing have you got in the blue mountains?

So, i went and did my climbing course on the weekend. You were right Rozza, climbing is freakin awsome!! I loved every second of it. I'm going again in a week and a half to learn how to set up top ropes and all that sort of stuff so i can start doing my own thing.

The course was bloody great, it was all climbing climbing climbing. We did all sorts of climbing - face climbing, crack climbing, corners, and others that i don't remember the lingo for (the opposite of corners??). The grades of the climbs ranged from 10 to 20.

Turns out i'm alright at climbing, i got up everything without any real hassles, except the grade 20. At the end of the second day the instructor decided that since i hadn't had a fall for the entire course that he would take me to a 35 metre grade 20. Now, 35 metres may not sound that high, but when you've gotta abseil down it then climb back up it with only 2 days climbing experience, it's a damn long way.

The instructor led the 35 metre climb in about 10 minutes without even breaking a sweat. However, i was not so graceful. It took me 40 mins to get to the top and i had about 5 falls on my way. It was bloody hard work but i got there in the end so i was happy.

My verdict - rock climbing is probably the best sport i have ever participated in and i'm most definately going to persue it. It's friggin wicked and you all should give it a go.

Here's some pics:

Yeah, I've been trying to climb 3 - 4 times a week so me and my buddy are ready for Plas-y-brenin and the Font. But this heat is making it impossible i'm burning out after a few problems, Climbing in france could be hellish if it gets any hotter , But no worries eh?

your climbing course sounds awesome LFB, what grading system do they use in Oz?

They use the australian system
let me just say that getting past a 17 on the first session is really fantastic.
you can convert grades here:

Well, i've got my next rock climbing course this weekend. This one will teach me how to set up my own top ropes so i can start doing my own thing. I'm going to buy my harness, shoes, and helmet on saturday, does anyone have any advice on reasonable gear to get??

So, after this weekend all i will need is a rope and a few other little bits and pieces and i'll be able to hit up some crags, i can't wait!! Turns out there's some good climbing just 5 minutes drive from my girlfriend's house. There's 4 crags with 115 routes ranging from grade 7 to grade 26 (upto 5.12b in the US grading system) and from 8 metres to 85 metres (26' - 280'). There's supposed to be some pretty good bouldering up there too!! Also, i've got the blue mountains just an hour up the road (56 crags, 2153 routes).

So, it looks like my mid semester holidays are planned

I love climbing in new shoes, the amount of friction you get for smearing and the like is superb
