I noticed a few weeks ago (and just before my last trip) that EMS had some new (new to me anyway
) locks that you can use to lock your luggage when checking it on a flight. It is a special lock that allows TSA to use some universal tool to open the lock should they decide to search your lugage. They can then re-lock the lock when completed so your luggage will be locked up for your flight. The lock has an indicator that is green when you lock it via the combination lock, but if it gets opened by security with the tool, it will show red.
I thought this was a cool little lock, as it at least it gives some luggage protection while still allowing security to search bags as needed. Of course, once all of the smart thieves get their hands on the lock tool used by TSA, their won't be much security, but it least it would stop some degree of casual theft.
I did use it on my trip and my luggage was never searched (or rummaged through by a thief with a tool....
). The lock's indicator remained green the whole time.
I am not sure if other country's security teams can open this or not. My experience has been that very few other countries search bags regularly anyway, so it is likely not a problem.
