ok 15 days to go so i should really think about buying a pack but when i went shopping i realised i have no idea what to buy and why i should be buying that one over another one.

HELP!!!!

Im going to oz fo a year so what should i be looking at getting pack wise aswell as essientials i should be putting in it. I will be traveling and will being trying to see as much as i can.

The dude it the shop was lame and wasent very helpful at all so cna someone point on the right path, im from the uk and have been looking in millets and blacks.

First off, read this post, it has all the general info for choosing a pack.

Being that you are going for a year, you might want a bit more space than many people choose. Here are a few options:

Packs with removable day packs:
Marmot: Eiger 55

Dana Design: Swift Traveler

The, packs with a removable day pack is what I would suggest, but, if you are more worried about have lots of space, then see the following:

Packs w/o daypacks, but that can carry EVERYTHING comfortably:

Dana Design Arc Series

Marmot: Arc Flex packs

i was looking to get something without the daypack bit as i have a nice sized pack already that im going to take.

You want all the basics. I would get a sleeping mat, sleeping bag and sleep sheet (for hostels, and so the sleeping bad does get musty). Sleep is important when you are traveling. Head lamp instead of a flashlight. Ziplocks come in handy. Convertable pants (legs zip off then they are shorts).

Things to pack if you're going to Oz:

Most important - a roo riding harness, that's the only form of transport down here, you should probably take some lessons when you get here.

Stubbie holder - you don't wanna make the beer warm now do you? Nobody will take you seriously unless you have one.

Stubbies (short work man shorts) - this makes you a man and instantly gains respect from those who count

A blue sheerers singlet - complements the stubbies well, and gains even more respect from the above mentioned people.

An akubra (aussie wide brimmed hat) with corks hanging from it - keep both the sun and the flies off you

Thongs (not bloody flip-flops) - it's the only footwear down here, if you wear anything else you will be labelled as a tourist and be robbed. Also, when worn in conjunction with the stubbies, sheerers singlet, and akubra you are a man and will be accepted and respected by the locals.

Aussie slang dictionary - you will look like an idiot and a tourist if you don't know common phrases such as 'frog and toad' and 'dead horse'.

Big knife - used for wrestling crocs, killing snakes, fighting roos, and buttering bread. Make sure it is bigger than the bloke's sitting next to you, it gains respect.

A prefered beer - every man knows his beer and drinks only that beer. Without this poeple will think you are unfaithful to women. You will also be robbed.

A liver in decent training - if you can't keep up with the boys you will lose all respect. Doesn't matter if you are wearing the right clothes, speak the right slang, and are a roo wrangler from way back, if you can't drink it's all for nothing.

A stomach that can handle meat pies for beakfast lunch and dinner - it's the only food down here, apart from what you can catch and kill with your bare hands.

A sense of humor - people will take the piss outta you as they do to everyone, if you get offended you will lose respect.

well there goes the idea of taking only a knief and the SAS survival guide,

im sure il be fine although my liver is kinda shot already and my prefered beer is from Poland. I have a Hat with corks was the first thing i bought, naturnally, and the official Mick Dundee knief. Awesome.

Being a man in Oz is easy if you only need to wear shorts here in blighty you need power tools and the Rocky box set at least, i got shit for wearing shorts on xmas day.

My sister just finished a year long treck in Oz and it was her first backpacking trip. She packed way too much, as most people do, and ended up ditching a lot of stuff along the way. Pack for the current weather because anything else you need you can buy.

Also, remember that you have to carry this bag on your back! It may seem light at first but after awhile lugging it around, it is going to get very heavy.

AEROGUARD the mozzies are freeking annoying out here!!!!!!! and Suncreen and HAT.... they are essentials in australia. Also learn how to treat snake bite if ya planning on hiking int he bush. I have lived in Australia all my life and have only seen 4 snakes, but ya dont want to get caught unprepared!

It goes on about something like... we've set off the fireworks and you see Sydney Harbour Bridge... saved you a spot on the beach and you see some bikini clad babe on a qhite beach.. and loads of other cool stuff... so exciting!!! :D
