But of course he only took day trips and mostly stayed on the Gold Coast in an apartment. I was wondering if you were actually lugging the thing around and traveling how you think it would work out? It doesn't have a frame or daypack or waist strap obviously but it sure does come cheap.

The overall opinion seems to be that a civvy pack is the way to go...

I would add that in several countries, it might be the worst idea to wear or carry anything army-related, Eastern Europe, everywhere in Africa, probalby Asia also. For your own security and their respect. That said, I don't know where you're planning on going.

Yeah even aside from the Army look aspect... you're probably gonna want a metal frame in the pack just for support... I've carried army rucks before for many many miles and they suck!

Good info, thanks guys. First I didn't even know they updated from the ALICE model, I'm not close to keeping up with the army like that. Neither sounds good though. I didn't even think about how it would look to wear that in another country, esp. Eastern Europe where I plan on going.

Those army bags are only good for putting 10 or 15 pounds as far as comfort.
There is no frame or weight distribution. It's just a bag with a strap. I dont believe it would affect your safety but I wouldnt want to drag one around.

My thoughts from just looking at the picture:
-Is it a top loader only? Imagine trying to locate something towards the bottom of the pack, you would have to take many things out first.
-The straps don't really look very supportive to carry a heavy load on your back.

The picture he has is a duffel bag... it's got straps on it only as a courtesy so when you deploy you can throw it on your back to get it loaded. It's not designed to be carried as a backpack, however.


< being Army, particularly right now, I wouldn't really recommend that for anyone (unless you painted it all punk or something cool) It's a top-loader, which makes it a pain in the butt to get anything out of. I have several, and I only use them to keep my military gear in that I don't need to get at too often.

If you're gonna be in one place for a long time, just buy a cheap (wal-mart) duffel to live out of.

Otherwise, if you're carrying your life on your back, go ahead and invest the money in a good frame pack that is fitted for you personally.

NOT recommended for Eastern Europe to have people think you're in the army :nono:

Nah, I'm not too disappointed, I was just hoping I could avoid paying hundred(s) of dollars for a backpack.
