Well dude it depends what your doing, If your just gonna be packing around traveling and hitting hostels ditch all the camping gear and the stuff that chels said I would maybe keep the Ipod and the board (keep the board if your hard into it otherwise ditch it)
However if your gonna be hiking and camping and stuff like that then all the other stuff there might come in handy even the GPS, I would then dtich the skateboard, I think you forgot to mension sleeping bag, if your camping theres no real point in having a tent without a sleeping bag unless you wanna layer up and lay on the floor ? |

If you're posting for comments, I'd ditch all of the electronics except the digital still camera (it can take video clips, too) and MAYBE the iPod. If you're going back-country, just take a few extra batteries. If you're going to developed areas, just take an extra battery and the chargers- that should be lighter than the solar chargers. I'd only bring the laptop if you are SERIOUSLY into photography and you want to do uploads, photo editing, and making CDs for others on the fly. You can also upload directly from your camera to your iPod, and most photo stores will also make you a CD for a few dollars. Sure Fire flashlights are durable, but not very light or efficient. Try a Princton Tek LED flashlight, or a small LED head lamp instead (I have the Petzel Zipka). If you're only camping for a short time (1-2 days at a time) the stove is probably overkill. Two pairs of pants is all you need- just bring a little camp soap (biodegradable) for washing them. Instead of four T-shirts, try just a couple, and also bring a long-sleeve button-down shirt. You'll appreciate this if it gets cold or if there are mosquitos around. You should also bring a light jacket. Many bring a fleece, but my plan is just to put on all my shirts plus a windbreaker and a fleece hat if I get hold. A wide-brimmed hat may also be nice. Again- seven changes of socks and underwear is overkill. YOu shouldn't need more than four- just wash as you go. Get the quick drying stuff for all of your clothes if possible. I'd hold off on the MREs as well. They're huge, and meant to be as varied as possible. For a true emergency, just pack a few Powerbars. A single Powerbar Protein will fill you up suprisingly well. I'd replace the GPS with a map and compass, but that is just me. You need to bring a map of where you are going anyway- don't rely JUST on the GPS. If you really want to bring all of that stuff, go ahead. To each his own. If you do bring that load though, I'd recommend bringing some serious hiking boots instead of light skate shoes. I think you'd be able to lose HALF of you pack weight while sacrificing very little functionality. You will appreciate that more than you might expect while on the move. |
Oh yeah- I just looked up the Element backpack. It is only 30 liters /1800 c.i. I don't think you're going to be able to fit all of that gear in there.
So where are you going, anyway? How much time are you spending in the backcountry vs. cities? |

Damn I wish we could edit our posts here! I met to mention that all of the above weighs in at about 25 pounds.
If anybody has suggestions about trimming some fat, other than getting rid of the mask and snorkel, I'd be interested in hearing your suggestions. Right now, the main bag is pretty damn tight with all of that inside, although there is plent of room if I remove the daypack. I've just been trying to get everything insdie the main bag for carry-on reasons. |
I'm going to be trveling for quite some time 2 - 4 maybe 5 years. That is why I am taking so much "CRAP".. lol. But It will all fit into the Element Buffalo No Problem.

Quite a trip! That does put it into context. Probably a good move getting the smaller computer hardware. Some will actually say you should pack LESS for a longer trip since you'll be hauling it so much further, but your list doesn't seem unreasonable- particularly after your revisions. Also, don't forget- you don't need to address every contingency from the moment you leave the door. You can pick stuff up as you need it, and replace stuff as it wears out. If you don't plan on using the stove often, you may want to look online for plans on homade alcohol stoves- VERY tiny. If you plan on using it a lot, you should probably bring some cookware with you. There are still a few things I'd reconsider if I were in your shoes though. I would think twice about the flashlight though- those Sure Fires are made for pounding nails with- heavy and overbuilt! Get a petzel or princton tek LED light. Besides- LEDs last for about 100,000 hours on average before burn out, and battery life is about 4x as good as a halogen bulb. That means you'll need no spare parts, and fewer batteries. You should also probably do a little more backpack research before you decide on the Element. You'll probably need something that is bigger than 1800 c.i., and you'll probably want a frame of some kind. Load up the Element and hike around for a few hours though. Then try to get your hands on a good hiking or travel pack and do the same thing. Kingcrazylegs could probably offer some suggestions, or I could just tell you right now that he'll suggest the Marmot Eiger 55 or one of the Dana Design packs. :) Clothing is definitely a personal choice, but four identical, cotton pants doesn't give you much versatility for climate or style, and they'll take a long time to dry if you try to hand wash them. Also, while most people here are proponenets of packing relatively light, this is YOUR trip. We've only offered suggestions- not rules. If you really want your skateboard, take it (Hell- I'm bringing snorkeling gear because that is important to me). If the GPS is important to you, bring it as well. When are you leaving, anyway? Don't forget to log on and give updates! |

Well, having your list ready is fine and dandy... but didn't you say that it'll be 2 years or so before you leave? Trust me, dude, your pack list will change by then. Try not to worry so much about what you're going to take with you until you get closer to the date. :cowboy:
Also-- skateboard? Probably a bit superfluous. That ain't packing light, let me tell ya! |
