Hey, I decided to go with the Dana Design swift traveller. thanks alot for all of your input. now I'm trying to find a good deal online somewhere. I measured my torso and I'm around 16", technically I should order a small pack. Problem is, the cheapest I can find is $270 American (I'm Canadian) plus shipping and taxes. That seems way out of my price range. I found one on sale at www.northernmountain.com for $160 American which is way more reasonable, only problem is that it only comes in a medium. Would it really be that big of a deal if it's a little too big for me? or would it be one of those things that I would be cursing myself for later on? Thanks.

There aren't really any stores around me that carry good quality backpacks, so I thought my best option would be the internet. Has anyone heard anything about www.northernmountain.com?? Which site screwed you over?

I have the exact backpack you are talking about, in a small. I am 5'4 and I would not want to go any bigger. Keep your eyes peeled because I got it on sale for $169 at REI outlet.com.

It's a great pack...but I wouldn't necessarily settle for this one, just because it is on sale because it quite possibly could be too big.

Also, I had absolutely no problems dealing with REI. In fact the first pack I ordered (the far flung) was too small (in volume, not too small for my body) so I had to return it. It was friendly customer service all the way and I would deal with them again.

Keep searching though, the sales are out there!

You can find it cheaper than that - for sure! I know I've seen it online for under $200. A Medium is not going to be much bigger than a small in length, and a pack is only as heavy as you pack it. The extra space might be a blessing. You can usually get one pack size and a different waiste belt size. I am 6'6 and 170lbs, so tall and thin. I got an XL pack for my height, and a medium waist belt for my build!

Yeah, the difference between small and medium is minimal at best-- one or maybe two inches in torso length and that's about it.

HA! Wow...

OK, well I can tell you that I have ordered from Northern Mountain and my pack came without a hitch. I got the same exact one (and the last black as well, but don't worry, it was large so you didn't miss out).

I'm still trying to figure out how to use half the straps and pulleys and levers and such on it but I gotta say that I'm pretty satisfied overall. If I could only figure out the hip belt, then I'd be rockin'

I gotta say though...it's gonna take work for me to get my pack down to a reasonable weight. Perhaps it's just because I'm new to the "pack light" game, but my back isn't skimping on the reminders that my pack currently weighs around 30 lbs...I know others are going to laugh at me for saying this (including you, benna) but I don't know how I'm going to travel out of this thing for 6 months! I need more room!

BUT...it's gonna be my life for the next year, so I guess I better learn and get crackin'!

SO yeah...NEW PACK! EXCITEMENT! Call Northern Mountain and see what their return policy is, and since they have free ground shipping, it might be worth seeing how the medium fits you.
