After much thought and consideration, online shopping and going back and forth.....I finally ordered my backpack! Not even 30 seconds ago in fact. I am gambling a little bit because I haven't tried it on because I don't have an outdoor store near me that carries this brand. But I have heard many good things about it (KCL and SpaceVirgin--great backpacking souls that they are) so I am just going for it.
Here is what I got The Dana Design Far Flung
I ordered a small because I am only 5'3 and the colour is black...because I am rather boring when it comes to colour. AND I would like to eventually get a travel punk patch to adorn on the front. I just was really happy about the price, with taxes and shipping it came to under $170.
Anyway...anyone who has this pack I am curious to see how you like it.

Sweet! I think you'll be happy with it. I'm sure you would have liked the Marmot one as well, but this is a great deal.

I'm kinda wondering about the cubic inches/liters of this pack...I used a conversion calculator thing on the internet and it said that this is approximately 50L but then I also read that it is anywhere from 75-80L. Keep in mind that I am a natural blond, so things like this tend to confuse me easily!! I don't want it to be TOO big...My sister is backpacking right now and she advised me to get a backpack smaller than hers (70L) because she said hers is too big.
Ummm. help? Thanks.

It's more like 50 to 60 at the absolute most. My Marmot says the c.u. size is 2900 to 3100, same as the Far Flung, and it's 47 to 50L. So, taking into account that different companies measure shit different ways, I'd say you're looking at right around 50L. It'll be perfectly sufficient, I promise.

Well I got the backpack in the mail today....very excited.
I am a little worried about how small it seems. Maybe it's just because I was picturing it to be bigger?? I don't know if I will be able to live out of it though!!
Also, it needs a freakin instruction manual...Maybe I am just backpack challenged but I don't know where to even put the waist strap (like where to attach it I mean, I know it goes around my waist!! )
KCL, SpaceVirgin...any hints/words of encouragement telling me that it will be big enough????????

Anyway, so I have done a little research, hummed and hawed with Anthon a bit and have decided that there is some major confusion regarding volume measurements and both the REI Outlet and Dana Design website. Of course it could just be the difference in models...either way it has this woman confused.
So the far flung that I got was 3100 cubic inches/approx. 53 liters. I tried it on and the fit is nice and comfortable, but I was just a little concerened about the size. Did a bit more research and found out that the Swift Traveller that they are selling at REI Outlet is 4100 cubic inches/approx. 67 liters. I decided to return the far flung and order the swift traveller instead. It will give me a bit more room. I have to wait for it to come in the mail of course so I won't know for sure until I try it on...but keep your fingers crossed for me!

benna - The pack I took to brasil was a 3500cu kelty and I took a 1700cu Camelbak as a day pack. I agree that the 3100 was a bit small and you should find the 4100 to be about the right size for everything.
well done chicita!

Dude, I'm glad we got it sorted. I think you'll be happy with the swift traveler - certainly a good pack to go with for a long trip!

Who said anything about bringing pants? It's way more interesting to do the whole "sans pants" route!

Whats a good CU or L size for a month long summer trip to Europe. Don't plan on bringing too much, but historically i'm a heavy packer and i like to be prepared.
thanks

Are you male or female? Kidding. Even though us chicks tend to bring more (we prefer clean underwear, ya know), I'd say you should be fine anywhere in the 40-60 litre range. Mine is 50. I also have a 60 which seems almost too big. *shrug*

don't worry...not offended..even as a guy however i prefer clean underwear and socks as well...not too worried about the other stuff. Thats a good range, now all i need to do is find a quality pack. i'm not so worried about price because its an investment for me. i know i will be getting alot of use out of it in the next few years...actually, alot of use out of it this year. i have a few trips planned so thats good. Anyone have a specific pack they like/have heard is awesome?
Chris
