CB-

Yes PACK LIGHT! There's nothing more annoying than carrying a bunch of crap you don't need on your back during your adventure. Once you don't shower for 48 hours, it won't matter how clean your tshirts are.

Let's Go says to bring only 1/2 of what you pack and twice as much money. It's good advice.

when I went for a month last sept/oct. I brought (including what I wore when I left):

2 long sleeve shirts (1 beat around, one nice)
3 tshirts (black, dark blue)
1 golf shirt
5 pairs of socks
5 boxers
1 pair of zip off cargos
1 pair of khakis
1 pair of shorts
1 pair of jeans
1 pair of "going to the shower" fast dry shorts
1 rain jacket (crumpled up into its own pouch)
1 windbreaker
1 pair of flip flops (for those nasty showers)
1 pair of hiking shoes
1 pair of dressier shoes

2 weeks into the trip I sent the jeans (too hot, too heavy) and dressier shoes (didn't wear them) back.
add a towel, shaving kit and charger/adapter bag in there and my 65 liter pack still had enough room for what I picked up along the way.

Here's a question for you guys: Do you include the clothes you're wearing on your body when you get on the plane in your packing lists?

well... i think this packing light business is easier said than done, for you guys at least. I'm going to Holland, France, Italy, and Czech Republic for 30 days.
This is what I'm bringing;
-access to about $3000CAD (thats not for my plane ticket, my ticket was only $590CAD!! to amsterdam!!) (credit card mostly. hahai really cant afford this trip but if i dont do it now will i ever? im 21!!)
-4 pairs of flipflops that once they get dirty, byebye! (which is why im bringing so many)
-1 pair nice sandals for going out
-2 pairs jeans,
-lots of shirts (tank tops, mostly)
-a few sweater/shalls for those breezy nights
-some socks
-some undies/bras
-bikini
-capris
-1st aid kit
-swiss army knife
-bottle opener/corkscrew
-my makeup (clearly)
-my contacts/glasses (boo)
also, i bought a little daypack sling pack from MEC its awesome, has hidden pocket on inside, very cool. im also bring one pad lock, one lock to lock my daypack and a cable lock.
anything else i cant remember. but i have a good pack and most of my clothes will fit very compactly into my pack... hehe WELL WHAT DO YA THINK!!!
im so excited i leave in 7 days!!! WOOOO

Here is my $.02:

Quote:

Bring ONE pair. If you need new ones, buy them over there.

Quote:
-2 pairs jeans
One is all you need. Really.

Quote:
-a few sweater/shalls for those breezy nights
Again, bring one. Why do you need several? The need to wear something different every day is not very important over there.

Quote:
-capris
One pair? Especially if you have a pair of jeans, bring only one, max!

Its fine and dandy that everything fits in your pack, but try carrying it on your back for three hours. You will be cursing every extra item you have. As long as you have clean socks and underwear...nothing else matters (almost).

I agree with LFoD
Quote:
-some socks
-some undies/bras
yet you specify that you are going to bring FOUR paris of flip flops + 1 pair nice sandals for going out. that is 5 pairs of open toe shoes. and only some undies and some socks... I would not short yourself on "undies" and socks

also you won't be seeing the same people repeatadly so if you where the same outfit on thursday that you did on tuesday and sunday... no one will know but you.

Besides selling clothes nowadays, Europe has these amazing things called laundromats, sometimes even in hostels!!! I usually pack fairly light, but still end up using half of whatever I take.

For last week's 9-day trip to Costa Rica, I took what I'd normally take for a long weekend just to get everything in on a carry-on, and still didn't make use of half the underwear (don't need to when you're wearing swim trunks half the time!), 1 of 3 t-shirts, a couple pairs of socks, nor one of my 2 dri-fit longsleeves. Between sinks and lavanderias I could've gotten by on even less clothing, and when you're hopping from town to town, it really does not matter if you're wearing the same outfit over and over again.

Another thing - there are nice clothes to be had for cheap in other countries. Zara and H&M in Europe, for example, can have you looking designer sharp for pennies on the dollar. I always jetison a few items so I can pick up new ones when I'm traveling - not only are there good deals, but you can have a souvenir to wear regularly.

People sometimes ask me, "Where did you get that jacket?" or "What kind of shoes are those?" I can tell them "Oh, in Holland" or "Some local brand I found in Barcelona" and strike up a cool conversation about travel.

Hear, hear! We packed all the clothes for all six of us for a month, in one pack, that was still light enough to carry, and had room for extra things we picked up en route.

Personally, I'd pack a skort (mine's a quick dry version from Columbia that I bought in Poland, as a matter of fact - so you can even get familiar brands) rather than jeans. Much lighter and I washed it many a time in the sink at the end of the day and wore it again next day.

If you can find one, I'd take a sarong rather than a shawl - it does the same thing, plus you can wear it as a dress/beach coverup, a skirt, or use it as a blanket or mat to sit on. Also, quick dry and the batik prints usually hide the travel grunge a bit til you can wash it!

I second the H&M, though I find Zara a bit pricey, except during sales. There's also a second hand chain called Humana (People to People) in some parts of Europe. They have good quality clothes for CHEAP, too. I think 95% of my kids' clothes come from there, and a good amount of mine.

My packing list for a month (just for me, I won't bore you with the kids) last year:

skort, capris, three tops, fleece sweater, sandals, 3 pr socks, 7 undies, 7 bras

Okay, so the general consensus is like 1 good shirt, a few t-shirts, 1 jeans, 1 shorts, and a healthy supply of undies and socks and a hoodie/sweater.

Two question still remain.... is it advisable to bring "nicer" shoes? I mean, will they let you into clubs, lounges and places with shoes that will inevitably become dirty?
And....is there some kind of packing to not get my shirt wrinkled?

well other than a sense of some rudeness amongst a few of you thanks for your suggestions, but i'd rather be exploring europe than exploring their stores and malls for stuff i need that i didnt take with me. and i dont know about you but i didnt specify undies and socks cuz well i'll throw some in there and see what happens, i dont where underwear half the time anyways HAHA and im sorry but spending time doing laundry in europe is not my idea of a vacation!.. and yes i understand the heaviness thing however, i just went and weighed my flipflops and they weighed 0.0009 of a pound (okay no i did not weigh them haha ) anyways thanks for the tips!
oh and canadian bacon, if your like me i think u want to remain trendy while away. so yes i would bring a nicer pair of shoes, where i live, people arent allowed into certain places without dress code, and lets be honest dou want to stick out by wearing flipflops in a club in paris or rome, etc where everyone is dressed nicer than u? just a thought. im bringing a nice pair of shoes! well i leave wednesday so have fun everyone!
