Hey I just thought about this, maybe its a stupid question but do you think that I could pack my leatherman ( knife.tool) when I travel to italy. Of corse it will be in my checked bag?

space virgin 03-01-2005 10:35 PM

yes, you should be fine with that in your checked luggage. Just make sure it's folded up nicely and tucked into its case!

i forgot and left mine in my hand luggage, i only realised when i got home and didn't get stopped.

it was one of the most usefull things i had with me

d_fresh 03-02-2005 05:34 AM

i brought mine in checked luggage. don't leave home without it.

if you haven't thought of it, don't forget a corkscrew!

TimmyJames1976 03-02-2005 05:42 AM

a corkscrew...holy crap...seriously good idea....again, another great tip from the tpunk board

what about a locking pocket knife? I have my leatherman, and yes i know it has a knife on it, but my pocket knife is just about my favorite thing to have with me when camping. If i put this in my checked baggage, do you think i wil have a problem??

J

No problems as long as they are in checked luggage!

lol, I broke mine off (cheapo swiss army knockoff) and ended up spending way too much time fumbling around rome looking for one....one with a bottle opener on the end (the heavy steel ones) is my recommendation.

JiveTurkey 03-02-2005 02:00 PM

Yeah, bring it.. You will find many uses for it.. I would of been screwed (not really, but I would of ended up buying one there) if I did not have mine..

Time for foo's 2 cents.

As a former boyscout, I used to own a leatherman. It was nice and all but didn't have eveything I need. I now own a real swiss army knife. It was $27 online and worth every penny. I has the corkscrew, a writing pen!, a toothpick, tweezers, 2 knives, can opener, bottle opener, screwdrivers, scissors, saw, ruler, awl, and even a hook for pulling stuff (the knife acts as a handle for a rope). This is the handiest thing I ever saw and I carry it with me all the time. I dont really run into a need for the leatherman's pliers while backpacking. I also bring a tiny sewing kit for clothing and backpack repair. Hope this helps!

Leathermans rip bring it along cause your gonna use it for sure

arbiter13 03-03-2005 03:08 PM

Now I was told that the easiest way to pack is to bring everything as a carry-on. If I do this, how can I transport a pocket knife or a multi-tool with a knife (without the cavity-search thing)?

omisan 03-03-2005 04:04 PM

You can't bring any sort of knife in a carry-on...

'Course, I've inadvertently packed mine in my carry-on a few times and never been stopped, but I think that's just dumb luck.

arbiter13 03-04-2005 10:15 AM

So what do I do? Just NOT bring one? Can I check in a single pocket knife?? stick it in a ziploc bag or something?

d_fresh 03-04-2005 10:30 AM

they won't let you bring anything sharp on a plane. has to be in checked luggage.

MolsonGirl 03-05-2005 09:16 PM

Haha you can bring anything you want (as long as it's not an explosive) on a plane as long as it's checked... My brother brought a full out sword home from England once, sharp and everything!

so if it's something you want... think more about how useful it'll be and how much you'll use it... not whether or not you can bring it... I bring a knife with me always.

I'm planning a backpack trip around Argentina (my first backpack in about 2 years my last before Uni). I will definatly buy a Swiss army knife and pack it. Not because I think I'll need it but because I'd rather have something like that and not need it than need something like that and not have it.
