A pack is really personal... I use a very basic 60L wherever I go... but some people need more room or more extras (like pockets)..
But best suggestion is to go to a store and just start trying them on.... get a whole bunch that are in your price range and just start testing... some will feel better to you than others...

Thare are all kinds of packs. Small packs, day packs, huge packs, and huge packs with day packs on them. I'm taking a 34 liter pack, which is kinda small for a month backpacking. It really all depends on how much you want to bring, how much you want to carry, and how long you will be traveling..

The best thing to do is find 2 or 3 packs that you like and then make a post for other members to comment.

But seriously back to the topic...
MG is right you really do need to try one on, no not one on lots on, and if you do find one buy it, take it home LEAVE THE TAGS ON IT! And try it out
Seriously wear it around the house load and unload it several 5 or 6 times just to get a feel for how it is going to work out... You are going to be using this pack as your closet for however long you are gone so it should be easy for you to get in and out of.
MAKE SURE IT IS COMFY. I think that every one will agree with me on this. One of the senior t punkers once said "never cheap out on good shoes or a bed because you spend the most time in these” Well I think that a good pack needs to be added to that list as well, because they don't call it backpacking for no reason.
Good luck post some links to different packs and people will comment on them. Personally I am partial to North face and Eagle Creek, I love the amenities that Eagle creek offers as well as durability, and North face is High quality with high comfort. Check 'em out try 'em on.
Oh one more thing when you do get one load it with everything you plan to take to see if it is big enough or if you need to cut down on packing because it is to heavy.

Yeah basically just following that idea... I don't pack much and when I was first buying my pack I borrowed a friends... got all the stuff I wanted to bring and tested to see if it would fit... I realized I didn't need a big pack and ended up only buying a 60L.... I may... in the very near future buy a new one that's bigger and has a nicer suspension system... one that is cooler on my back.... but at least I knew what size I needed by testing a friends.
