Ok so, I'm not all that tall (5' 6") but I have a pretty long torso for my size (18 inches). Should I stick to looking at women's packs or is it not going to matter that much? I would check out stores around here to try some on, but there really aren't many places, and most of them are at least a 30 to 45 minute drive (don't ask me why, it's not like I'm in a small town)and not geared to backpacks. So most likely I'll be buying off the net, and I need a good starting place.

Also, what size would be good for a roughly monthlong trip in Europe during December/Jan? We're planning to go to Paris, England, Germany, and Amsterdam if that helps. I know it will be plenty cold (especially to a Florida girl) and want to make sure I've got the room to pack cold weather gear.

Hi Ceridwen,

Well, the tough part is that it would really, really benefit you to make the drive to try some different packs on-- even if you end up buying it off the internet later. I'm not sure about size but I *think* that 65L would be sufficient. If you're there and you can try them on, then you'll know whether or not a "women's" style backpack is going to benefit you. I'm short-- 5'2-- so what is true for me may not be the same for you, know what I mean? Good luck though, and have fun on your trip!!!

There's not much difference between a man and a womans pack. alot of brands have unisex models. The main difference is usually the shoulder straps (a bit more curved for those well endowed women) and sometimes in the hip straps.
If your on the small size i would suggest avoiding the large 70L packs, (u dont want to be carrying that much weight)
The best thing to do is go to a store (or several) and try on the different brands, dont look at prices but find which brands fit you the most comfortably.
hope that helps.

And enjoy the shopping.

I think the size depends on how much you like to pack. In Dec and January I get the feeling you'll be wearing the heavy stuff (jackets and pants ect) most of the time and only really need extra undies and shirts and stuff (clothing wise) 65L should (but don't quote me) be ok. But also remember if you plan on going on any trips in the future, you'll probably still have the same backpack as for this trip so perhaps a bigger one might be most economical. I'm also 5'6 (and a half hehe) and I can carry a 70-80L, however on long walking sectioins it does get heavy and cumbersom. Plus I'm also really athletic and was once in the army cadets (where we hiked with realllllly heavy packs for very long periods of time) so that could be an advantage to me. I agree about the "women's pack" thing... Forget that... I think size and durability are the main issues. (oh and padding. gotta have that)
