What kind of backpack?
In August I'm going 'backpacking' for two wks in Germany and Italy - 'backpacking' in the sense that I'll be staying in hostels and carrying everything on my back as I travel around. Not planning to hike or do anything in terrain; it's going to be a sightseeing trip. So I will need a big backpack to carry two-weeks-worth of clothes and belongings, etc., but the features that come on the large-capacity, well-rated backpacks are unnecessary for me (loops for climbing poles, pockets for rope or shovel, and all that). Can anyone recommend a good pack to suit this trip?

We have a whole forum on backpacking gears, where I moved your thread for better visibility.
My basic tip would be to keep the weight at a maximum of 30-35 lbs, and to achieve that, plan clothes for 3 days, more underwear, plus one nice outfit for the dance floor !

Esther nailed it. From there, the best thing is to actually try a pack on for size before you buy it. That means hoofing to a store that sells a variety and seeing how it fits your frame. It'd be awful to pack it up, leave, and find out it doesn't work for you.
As for brands, there's tons out there. Don't necessarily be concerned with the brand off the bat, because each one will fit differently.
