I've had many, many recommendations for backpacks to get, but I'm not completely sure which ones they'll have at my local store...I'm sure I can get them ordered in, but that's not really my style, that's just far too organised.

So just to be on the safe side, are there any particular makes that I should avoid buying?

Also, what are the main considerations when deciding how big the backpack should be? I will go to get one fitted for size etc, but for now I just want to plan things.

I'm about 6ft, so technically a long, big pack should be fine, but I'm not exactly muscle bound, so maybe a smaller one would be better?

I'm thinking that no matter how big the pack gets, I'll be able to fill it with something or other, so it might be best to limit space to some extent anyway.

Also #2, how can I actually test a backpack at a store? I won't be able to take my gear along to load it up, mainly because I don't have much of that gear yet...

Just wondering how you would be able to get a realistic impression of what the pack would feel like loaded...

It's a store right????? they don't only sell Bpacks, ask for assistance and tell them that you need to check the Bpack will indeed be of use and that you are gonna do a test. :greenguy:

alot of camping stores have weight things which simulate gear, and theyll stick them in the pack so you can walk around with it. I got my pack at usoutdoor.com and got free shipping, so if you find something you like it might be cheaper online.
