My (ex) fiance lives in Mildura, but we spent time in Adelaide and Melbourne. The highlight of my trip was going to McClelen national park, 10 min. out of Adelaide. (I am probably not spelling that right.) There is an area where you can pet and feed kangaroos, which is good because I am an animal freak and I only saw dead kangaroos on the road. Adelaide was pretty boring, but Melbourne was really fun. You can spend hours (and way too much money) in the Crown Entertainment complex if you are bored. The great ocean road was my second favorite part. You can drive through in a day, or spend a week staying in B&B's and hostels. There are a lot of great beaches and rock formations along the road. The only problem I had was that my American accent put a lot of people off. Of course there are exceptions, but usually people were not as friendly to me until they actually talked to me and realized that I am not one of the girls on outback jack, or jerry springer for that matter. I'm not sure why this is, but my advice is to just ignore the eye rolling and cold shoulder and just be yourself. Once they figure out that you really are a nice person, they will forget your accent and be very friendly to you.
