I just booked a flight to visit a friend in Australia! It will be our first time there, and we only have 16 days. We were thinking of going to Sydney, Byron Bay, Brisbane and Fraser Island. Any advice? Must see places?

Any and all words of wisdom are great, esp. about budgeting!

I have a blog of my Sydney/QLD trip, which covers a chunk of those places, and I've listed prices/transport/hostels wherever I could... You can start at the bottom of this page:

Thanks for the advice! My work blocks blogspot.com so I haven't had a chance to look at your info yet, Omisan, but I will go to the library soon!

One more question: We are looking to go on a three day camping tour of Fraser Island... any advice as to which ones are great, which to avoid?

Thank you!

I haven't done it, but every hostel I stayed at near the area and backpacker who did it recommended Cool Dingo. I also noticed that the front desk at the YHA's had the best discount on 'em.

Thanks for the cool dingo tour advice! We are going to book it

One more question. I have been looking online to get my OZ tourist visa. I have found two websites. I may just be being paranoid but do you think they are legit? Seems too easy!

Thank you!

considering the eta.immi.gov.au address belongs to the Australian government, I'd say it's legit

In fact, that's the one I used. A lot of airlines can also arrange the ETA for you if it's not already included, but it's usually cheapest to do it on the Aussie gov web site. Before you do anything, call your airline and ask them if the Aussie ETA is included in the price and if it has been dispatched.
