Talking

Hi everyone, this is my first post on this site, it seems really cool. anyway... I'm off to Sydney in march and i cannot wait!! i'm going on my own which is a little bit daunting but i'm really starting to get used to the idea and i am glad in a way.

I'm gonna go for a year working my way around, no proper plans yet of where i'm gonna go probably just travel the coasts surfing as much as possible and working as little as possible :D

has anyone got any tips for me?

also I've got a couple of questions that u guys might know the answer to.

1. with the working holiday visa would i have to buy a return ticket to oz to prove i am gonna leave the country or is it ok I buy a single then get a ticket elsewhere at the end of the year away?

2. I understand you have to have £2000 in your bank when you go, does this include your overdraft limit? i think it does but better be sure before i go.

3. How warm is the sea through the winter months around the sydney area? will i be able to wear a shortie wetsuit?

I could write about a billion questions but i better not so i'll leave it there for now.

any responses would be greatly appreciated!

cheers

Harry

To the Boards HArry_UK, always great to have a new memmber, pull up a chair and enjoy!!!

To answer your questions:

1. You will most likley need to have a return ticket, or a ticket that shows you will be leaving the country by the time 1 year has passed, so you do not have to be going back to the UK, just anywhere but OZ.

2. No, the overdraft limit does not count, that is considered debt. If you spend your 2000P and start to use your over draft to support your self, you are in trouble!! You will need the required amount of funds in your account.

3. I was there in the winter and it seemed to rain alot??? The news said one day there was more rain than in the last 50 years??? So just be prepared, you should be ok with the wet suit :D . But Cliffo with have more to tell ya about that, he has got the first hand knowledge on Australia!!!

Hope that helps dude!!!

Harry_UK, Re the water temp in winter - i don't swim in the ocean in winter but i think i'm soft With a wetsuit you should find it at least bearable - heaps of people still get out surfing during winter so it depends on how well you handle the cold water.

To put a number on it I'd say you'd be looking at water temps around 16-19 degrees Celcius in Winter. However coming in March it will be a bit warmer than that but starting to cool down.

Thanks guys thats really helpful.

Canadian dude - you've got me a bit panicked tbh! i'll be able to sort it though so i have +2000 by the time i go. also why would i be in trouble if i used my overdraft? As i'm a graduate I live in my overdraft. Its interest free and the dont want it paid off for three years so there shouldnt be a problem surely. And as far as debt goes I'm screwed if they look at that because of my student loan!! but that obviously cant count as loads of ppl travel after uni. its all quite confusing. Thank you for your help, much appreciated and thank you for the welcoming to the boards i'm sure i'll be here lots over the next few months!

cliffo - thanks dude i'm sure it'll be fine considering thats how warm the water is here in england in the peak of summer. and as I surf winters here too water that warm is gonna be an absolute dream!! i'm so excited

Not in trouble for spending overdraft, I am the king of overdraft , but depending on it to get the work/vacation visa might put you in a bad spot if you get refused for the visa...sorry for the confusion. :D
