Iím trying to figure out which direction will be best for me to do the East Coast in.. North to South or South to North?!

Being a sole traveller I want to choose the way that will help me meet the most travel buddies going in the same direction

Iím planning on doing it during July/Aug/Sep..

will it be best to fly to the North and work my way down as Iím setting off in winter? Or do most people do it South to North no matter what time of year it is?

Sorry if its a silly question!

It definitely depends...

Myself, I would do it North to South. That way you miss the heat. Although, if you're keen on humidity and sunburn, go South to North. Also depends how far north you want to go too.

Just a guide - today, where I am (Rockhampton, QLD - on the Tropic of Capricorn) it's 37 degrees outside. Hot. Definitely too hot to be gallivanting around - it's cold beer and cricket kind of weather.

Not sure on travelling patterns...but weather wise, definitely North to South. And you can count on the weather being hot from August onwards anywhere north of Brisbane.

Hope it helps a little.

Ahh it defo sounds like North to South is the best option weatherwise

It seems that most people go South to North tho and as I'm traveling on my lonesome what are the chances of meeting up with people going the same way as me?

Claire i'm going north to south, but not at the same time as you, i'm flying into Perth and out of Sydney so i'm going clockwise round, i'm hoping to meet people going the same way as me aswell!

It's all such an adventure!

yep, north to south at that time of year, it's definately too hot up north in september. Most people that come to Oz do the east coast so you will have no problems running into other travellers....especially poms, there's 1000's over here.

When I was there last year, I met many people there that were doing North to South, so if it works with the weather, you should do it. Given the time of year you are going, I would bet more people will be doing North to South anyway...but regardless, there will be many people going both ways, it won't be a problem, you will not feel like an outcast or anything. Enjoy!

You gotta do the north when it's at least kinda hot...
or else it just wouldn't be right. Just to let you know, some of the southern states (like victoria...ugh) can get REALLY cold in winter. well from an aussie point of view; don't know what it's like where u live.

Wow, now that's bringing a thread from the dead!

Last November I did south to north, and then back to the Brisbane area again. Mostly because of certain obligations (weddings, birthdays). Most people do indeed do North to South, whether for weather reasons or simply because it's more popular. I liked that in going from S->N, I met tons of different people (instead of people on the same route) and got to hear their tips about stuff up north while I filled them in on points south.
