Hey!

I’m fairly new to the board so hiya! :D

I’m planning on doing the working holiday visa and have just ordered the Australia & NZ on a Shoestring book.. Looking to fly out February/March 2006

I will be based in Melbourne for the first few months and moving on from there depending on what sites I want to see in what order.

Before I delve into my book I would like to hear your recommendations of places to go and interesting places to visit including those places that may not be in your average tour book.

Thanking you

I loved Ibiza too.. Bora Bora was my fave place (obviously) Love to go again but the next time I set foot on a plane its gonna be much further afield than Spain for defo

I'm not too sure if this was the right forum to put this topic, if you think it'll get more hits somewhere else I'm all ears!

Welcome aboard.

I'll be heading to Oz/NZ for a month in November, so I'll be sure to be posting reports then... In the meantime, we have a handful of resident Aussies who should be able to sort you out!

Hey Chocolatly, Welcome to TPunk.

I'm also getting a New Zealand and Australia working holiday visa. I'm just not leaving until the end of May. I'll be there for a year. How long are you planning on staying?

You'll get all your questions answered on here.

My sister is there right now on a working holiday visa and has really fallen in love with Byron Bay. She is heading over to Western Australia right now, which she has heard is really great as well.

I'm hoping to head to Oz in March of next year......saving my money until then!

Oh my gawd! I didnt expect this much of a welcome.. cheers guys! :D

Teri.. I'll be staying in Oz for the whole duration of my visa hopefully, I've heard you can extend it by another year so I'm looking into that at the mo

I'll more than likely be going on my own and its my first proper big trip, hopefully I wont get too lonely and want to leave early.

Whats the best way to meet people down under?

Just smile and say g'day. I've never ran into any Aussies (except some snobby Sydneysiders) who weren't totally open and friendly from the get-go. I anticipate you'll have no problems meeting people there. Hell, there are a bunch of people I haven't even met who've offered for me to stay with them when I get there, that's how friendly they are!

I've found the same thing and I haven't even left for Oz yet! Aussies (friends of friends) have offered me places to stay...so welcoming!

Probably the best way to meet people (although I doubt you'd meet many locals) is at the hostels...I've gotten myself a dorm room 'cause I find that's a great way to meet people right away...you don't really have much choice when you're sleeping in the same room!!

Cheers

Hello and welcome

i too havnt been on these boards for long but they have helped me a great deal with organising my up and coming working holiday. so its my absolute pleasure to hopefully answer any questions about Oz that you need.

Well firstly im from sydney and most people here are extremely receptive of foreigners! i too have let strange londoners that i met in byron bay stay at my place in sydney because well thats the way aussies are. if you run into snoby sydneysiders i wouldnt fret, as they are probably rich kids from the northern suburbs whom nobody else in sydney gets along with anyways!. id love to offer you accomodation but unfortunately i'll be in canada at that time doing the working holiday thing.

if you can get urself to the red centre! the kimberly, devils marbles, uluru etc are all MUST SEE!......just imagine being in the middle of a desert, teaming with weird and unusual creatures and not needing a torch at night cause there are so many stars that they light up the ground!

if you want to see a "ridgy didge" sort of aussie town head to places like ballarat (victoria), dubbo (New South Wales), Uludulla these are sort of quiet towns but still big enough to have a good time with the locals.

if you want party town then DEFINATELY go to byron bay(NSW) you wont regret it, an absolutely amazing place to go! so many things to do during the day, and so many places to get shitfaced at night! all in a town which has 1 main street!
the second best party town is Airlie Beach in northern Queensland, bout 100km's from another good small city Mackay. Airlie is truly amazing, you will have a blast there. if you get there hire a moped and just ride! you will find so many cool things in the surrounding areas, like secluded waterfalls and all kinds of stuff! its great. its also the major mainland hub to the whitsunday islands. you havnt seen white sand until you've seen some of these islands....GO SCUBA DIVING aswell.

now keep moving north and see places like townsville, port douglas and cairns....great towns and major ports to see the reef. the good thing about north queensland is that its always hot. if u do end up there in summer check with the locals for stinger suits, you dont want to go for a swin on the beach and have a run in with a stinger.

for the west coast go to perth and see if you can go to the surrounding coastal towns as they are gorgeous. go abit north to places like port headland and if you can go to Broome as there is an awesome croc farm there! there you will hopefully meet a man called Malcolm Douglas. this man is the REAL crocodile hunter! (everyone here knows steve erwin is a toss!) this guy is a real life macguever. he can build anything out of nothing and find food anywhere, an absolute australian LEGEND! so if you can id try and go there!

well sorry for blabbering so much or for being repetitive but i dont know whats in the book and AUS is such a big remote place so there is alot to see!

anything else just let me know, you'll love this place!

cheers

Awesome tips, Franky... I plan on spending a good chunk of time surfing and partying it up in Byron Bay! Anybody have any word on Noosa Heads? I'll be there for a few days for a wedding, and so far, other than a few hostel listings, all the info I can find is for upscal, grown-up things to do...

Omi Noosa heads kicks arse not so commericalised as Byron Bay and it just rocks. It is a very rich place of Sth QLD so don't wxpect accomodation to be cheap an awesome place to go to around there as Mooloolahbah (hope i spelled it right) this place rocks a lot cheaper and full of young surfers.

Chocolaty all i can say is if you go to big citys eg Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane they are pretty much the same as any other big cities. Although Melbourne is very European, Sydney is very American and Brissie is just getting bigger every time i go there. If you want to see the real Australia go into the Outback like Longreach QLD and work in pubs or something. These places although small are awesome you can go out on the piss and meet everyone in the town.Franky has given a pretty good guide to go around but if you have any more question please just post them

im sorry to keep going but i was over a mates house the other day and we were talking of the good old days......anyways i have 1 more place to add to the above list......Nimbin! its up in north eastern NSW about 40min from byron bay if memory serves me correctly. this town is a must see if you like to occasionaly or always like to indulge in abit of a smoko - the grean reaper.

if you can usually around early may, which is when we went, they have the MARDI GRASS
which is just a HUGE choof festival and its god damn hillarious!!. they have the pot olympics with such events like "the bong throw". also 'stuff' is also readfily available in the streets and in shops during the festival and in fact all times of the year. good times my friends good times

Hey Chocolaty Claire, welcome! The following are my tips and highlights:

Northern Territory
Kakadu National Park - Aboriginal rock art, billabongs and waterfalls.
Uluru - The big red rock speaks for itself.

Queensland
Cairns - Backpackers party town with the most beautiful and well preserved rainforest (Daintree) to the North.
Great Barrier Reef - You have to take a glass bottom boat trip over this or at least go snorkelling!

Western Australia
Broome - One of the most special beaches. Cable Beach has one of the best sunsets you will see!
South West area - Margaret River, one of our best beach getaways.

Victoria
Great Ocean Road - I haven't done this before but hoping to hike this spectacular coastline sometime in my life!

If you make it to the West (Perth) drop by and say G'day...

ev

Im a born and bred Aussie and i can tell you anything on the coast of Australia is beautiful, if you manage to stay somewhere along the line on a beach town like byron bay or coffs harbor or something further down the south-east coast you will absolutely love it. The towns are lovely and so are the people. If you find someone who is being a snob they probably arnt Australian haha, so just ignore them. We are a very receptive nation and love tourists.
