I will be studying abroad in Wollongong, AU for 5 months from Feb 28-July 6 2005. I plan on leaving 2 weeks early to utilize my 2 stopovers. I plan on staying in Fiji for a few days, then New Zealand for a week or more. Afterwards, I want to fly into Melbourne and travel up the coast to Wollongong. I was wondering if anybody else would be traveling around this way at the same time as me. Has anybody ever done something like this in the south pacific? Does anybody have any suggestions or ideas to minimize costs, ideas for a budget, etc? I will be backpacking through Fiji, NZ, and southeastern AU before I get to Wollongong and settle down. I'm thinking I should just have the bulk of my stuff shipped to my destination and travel with the rest in a backpack because I will be needing a lot for school and 5 months of living. Is this a plausible idea? Or would it be extremely expensive? Finally, do you all take cell phones with you? Like the GSM phones you can buy minute cards for? Would that be the best thing or is a phone really not important? I'm just thinking for general help with things or emergencies.
