It's probably always a good idea to go somewhere first before making a permanent decision to live there. That said, I can't imagine why wanting to live in Sydney would be "daft".

I am moving from UK, in a city called Leeds up north.
Are people really friendly in Sydney as they say they are?
I hope so, because everytime i ride my bike here I get shouted at or beeped at, i dont know why?
Is there racism there as much?
PS - do people live in houses or flats mainly in Sydney? I heard a place called Balmain is good but expensive

Believe me Sydney is a great City. I live in Coventry and was out in Oz for a month for Christmas and New Year and it's much dodgyier (sp) back here in Cov.
Everyone is a lot more chilled out as you would expect and in fact the only fight we saw was two English having it in an Irish bar!!
Don't get me wrong like any major city it can be moody in places and the "Cross" is like Soho so you have to be a bit more on your toes but you'd be fine!
Plenty of house shares out there and i'd definitely recommend getting over here!!

lmao we went on a "family" holiday once and stayed one street off the cross! really isnt that but..lol lil bit of an eyeopener for the ten yo lil bro as he counted the strip clubs on the way to the train each day ....he was particularly intrigued by the one called "porkeys"
lol one of the doormen actually had the nerve to offer a family discount....

I'm 27 and I did the same!
Nothing wrong with Porkies!
Ha ha seriously though, I had heard a lot of stories about the Cross and it really isn't that bad! BELIEVE I have been to a lot, lot worse places in England!!
Sydney, well Australia as a whole, was really good! Just take the plunge and do it! At the end of the day you're only 24 hours away from Leeds if worst comes to the worst anyway!!

yes, people are friendly here. of course not all people but you get that anywhere... unfortunately sydney isnt really a city made for cycling so there's often no cycle lane in the streets but as long as you abide by the road rules you shouldn't get harassed by drivers.
I grew up in the country and there is no where near as much racism here as there is in country towns... but i live in the centre of the city, where there is a huge asian population and everyone lives together pretty happily. out in the suburbs there has been racism riots before but these are in the areas where there is a concentration of one or two nationalities and they're gang related. but these are areas far away from the centre of the city and i hate people thinking badly of us for these rare events.
I would say there's a pretty even mix between people living in houses or flats.. in the suburbs its mainly houses but they're expensive... especially anywhere on the north shore where balmain is. That kinda area is mainly rich old people & families, there's not too much share housing going on. there's a few apartment blocks over there but most of them have views of the harbour and that puts your rent up very high. Areas where a lot of students live are places like glebe, ultimo, surry hills, newtown, camperdown etc. most students i know live in terrace houses or old apartment blocks.
