I don't know about Sydney, but believe me... flies are waaaay better than mosquitoes!! Last week we had a mosquito invasion here in Buenos Aires and it was freakin annoying!! So flies aren't really a big proglem, just wave your hand around and they're gone.

I never saw any flies in Sydney....BUT holy shit the outback is covered with them. I actually bought a flynet to wear over my head. People laugh and think oh whoo hooo just a bunch of flies. No no no...These ones hang around every orifice on your body. They sit on your eyelashes, and buzz in your ear canal. I actually have swallowed about five of them.

In Melbourne we have actually had very few flies in the summer lately. I think this is because of the drought.

Besides everyone in Australia wears a hat with corks hanging off it to barbie's anyway.

yeah, raoulduke is right. and if the flies get too annoying you can pull out your knife and wave that around.
the flies are worse in the country than they are here.. this summer i've hardly noticed any. but if you're having a bbq, they'll find you. but thats just part of having a barbie. cover up the salads right up until the last minute and just keep waving the tongs around so they dont get to the sausages.

And try to forget that whenever they land on food, they are simultaneously excreting and vomiting.

I was *covered* in flies on some particularly hot days in Sydney in the summer, particularly near the ocean. My coworker was wearing a light colored polo shirt and at one point when walking near Manley beach, it actually looked black. But yeah, they're merely a small, occasional annoyance - I'll take 500 flies over 5 mosquitoes any day.
