Question I paid for my damn visa, so now I am going!

Alright, so I finally am doing my paperwork for my Australian visa...ideally I want to stay for a couple of years and get dual citizenship, however, they will only give me 4 months to start off with

Here's the plan...

move in to a hostel in Sydney and find a room mate so I can move in

Here's the problem...

I've never been to Oz and have no idea where to go, I will be looking for a job (pref. a real job, hotel maybe?) and should be in the central city

Here's where you come in...

Give me advice

Tried looking at any job finding websites yet? Maybe ask the people in the department where you get the Visa from if they know of any companies in particular that are usually looking to take in people in your situation. Also, try sending out emails to HR or recruiters of various hotels in the area your looking at heading to.

Wakeup! is the place to be, I stayed there 3 times while in oz and had an amazing time. Plus there is a bus that will take you straight there from the airport.

http://www.wakeup.com.au/

Almost all hostels in sydney have a job board and there are tons of companies willing to help out in the city centre.

Sta travel used to do a starter kit for people going to oz which includes sim card for your phone, details of job agencies, a free night in a hostel etc but I cant't find it on their site at the mo

Hey sorry I didn't get to this thread sooner.

You could look up bunch of hotels in the area and send an e-mail about yourself with your resume attached. I think if it's done professionally it would be a great way to get your foot in the door. Make sure you remember the name of the person you e-mailed then contact them personally once you get to Sydney either by phone or in person. Many of the hotel's websites might also have a section detailing position vacancies.

If that fails and you want to go for a more broad approach, two of the main jobs sites in Oz are ww.mycareer.com.au and www.seek.com.au

Or go to google.com.au and do a search in Australia for hospitality jobs or employment agencies.

As for finding somewhere to live maybe have a look at the notice boards at a nearby University and see if someone else is looking for a room mate. If not I'm sure there will be papers and such you can use. I'm not from Sydney so my experience as to where you should live is limited. I can tell you from my own non-Sydney experience living in an inner city apartment can be surprisingly cheap if you share with a bunch of people.

Once you arrive and chat to some random people I'm sure you'll get a feel for it really quickly.

Also be sure to come down to Melbourne so I can show you around.
