Ok, hey everyone, excuse my ignorance and all, and this has probably been asked many times before.............

I am off to the wonderful land of Oz on the 1st October this year, and am going for just over a month.

I just wondered if anyone who has been, or lives there, who can tell me what is wise to take (What sort of clothing is cool, etc etc), where to stay, and approximately how much money is adequate to take?! I think I'll be staying in and around Sydney more specifically....

I know its alot to ask, but I'd be greatful if anyone can post their suggestions on here........ and who knows, maybe we could meet up in Oz and parrrrrrrty.

Love to you all,

From the Lars&thebastards xxxxxx

Hmmmm, well, it will be starting to warm up in October, so you should be right to wear shorts just about every day if you stay on the coast. Hostels cost around $20 a night. A large big mac meal costs $5.95, so scale prices of everything to that and it'll give you an idea of how much to bring.

Just one piece of advice, don't come to Oz and hang around Sydney for a month, that would be a waste of a trip IMO, Australia has a lot more to offer than just Sydney. Sure, spend a bit of time in Sydney, but then go up or down the coast, or inland.

I think that sunscreen will be your best friend. One day without it and you could be a big red painful mess for the rest of the week. Not a good look. Sunglasses are also pretty important.

Boardshorts are acceptable for both swimming and everyday wear so definitely include a pair of them as well as a bunch of t-shirts and some jeans or cargo pants and a collared shirt for going out.

I'd also recomend getting away from Sydney. Not that there is anything wrong with Sydney but you'll regret it if you don't see more of Aus and a month is plenty of time to check out a couple of cities. Check out www.jetstar.com.au or www.virginblue.com.au for some super cheap domestic flights. Either head up to Queensland and explore Brisbane or Surfers Paradise or down to Victoria and check out Melbourne and the great ocean road. Keep in mind the water is a lot warmer up north if you plan on going to the beach.

Also in Sydney you can climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This is very expensive and not particularly exciting.

Good Luck

I meant to post this in this thread, but accidentally posted it in a completely unrelated thread instead somehow!

When I get to Oz in November, we are going to make our way up along the East coast from Sydney to Cairns. We're doing this with a Mini Traveller's Pass from Greyhound. It costs about £110 and is valid for 45 days. You can get off and on the bus as you please, and it stops at loads of different places along the way.

I was just in OZ in May and I would agree, spend some time outside of Sydney. I went up the coast from there and my "must-sees" were Byron Bay (surf/beach town, really fun, lots to do) and Fraser Island. Check out www.dingotour.com for Fraser Island tours.
Also - I took JetStar from Sydney up the coast and it was only a bit more expensive than greyhound, plus saved at least 10 hours of travel time!

Byron Bay is a place to take surf lessons, hike, enjoy a small beach town, we went kayaking and saw dolphins, it was just amazing. Check out the Arts Factory Hostel. My sister loved it.

I second going up the coast. Surf camp is awesome. Cairns is a great gateway to all sorts of adventure, particularly seeing the Great Barrier Reef. Gold Coast is cheesy party central. Sunshine Coast is stunning and chill...

Here's my photo/travelogue on Australia - might give you some ideas on what to do/where to go with a few details of places here and there.
