hey there,

i'm heading to sydney june 11th and i was just wondering what the clubs are like over there? i'm canadian, and here in town just about anything goes. in vancouver, it's dress to impress, but i still get away with casual clothes. i was just wondering what i could get away with over there. jeans? tees? can i wear sneakers?

thanx!!!

All depends on what sort of places you wanna go. If you want to check out the big-name main clubs in the city - jeans only if they're VERY nice and expensive looking (i.e. the kinda jeans a backpacker just doesn't have the room for), t-shirts no, sneakers, hell no. I'm an aussie (currently AWOL in europe) and one of my Australian friends went to Canada last year and commented on how much more casually the girls dressed to go out there compared to in Aus.
But having said all that, there are plenty (many, many many) of places you can go out and dance/drink/whateva without a strict dress code. And personally I think you're far more likely to have a good time in those places. I've managed to go 4 months now around europe living out of a backpack that doesn't contain a single decent outfit, and every time I go out I have a fantastic night.
BTW, lonely planet is normally pretty good for warning about how snobby (oops, I mean 'exclusive') a club is.

hahaha, great! thanx a bunch. i'm totally into the casual scene, and i totally forgot that i'll be living out of my pack for a while. less of a 'bar star' and more into going to see bands play at a club or something like that. i'm waiting for the new edition of lonely planet to come out, but i'll definatly keep that in mind. thanx again!

betti- okay good you haven't got the new LP australia either! Yeah their website mentioned that it comes out in January and I've been to 3 bookstores and they all have the old copies. have u heard any news?

Ha, girls never get c0ck-blocked outta clubs so it don't really matter what you wear! It's always "ladies' nite" in da clubs!

betti - depends on where you go. If ya go to a pub, jeans and t-shirt is fine, some clubs you'll be fine wearing jeans, more up market ones...well don't bother wearing jeans.

I find i have the best nights at pubs as its a much more relaxed atmosphere with a lot less posers...but hey, thats just what i like.

For a female as long as you get creative... it doesnt matter really what you wear. I've been to some of the snobbiest clubs in manhattan wearing jeans and a cute tank. Here are some tips.

1. Dark Jeans are always better... actually dark colors are always better unless you have some kick ass outfit a la britney spears. ;)

2. Dont wear sleaves... tanks are a must.

3. Get creative... if you dont have a hairdryer or products with you... get your hands on some chopsticks from a takeout place and put your hair up with those.

4. I dont know about other girls.. but I live in chapstick! But as far as traveling with tons of makeup... not gonna happen. Bring a nude/taupe eyeliner (the cheap 99c kind) and use that. Its great to lightly line lips & eyes and gives a smokey nighttime effect.

Wow I feel like I'm in cosmo

I was just in Syndey for New Years and found little problems with the clothes I brought. I made sure to have one of the previously mentioned dark pair of jeans. I had a couple of versitile tops (yep, all tanks too) and did the inventive thing with my hair. Through on some cheap jewelry (low key stuff) if available and you are done.

The only problem I did encounter concerned my shoes. I was actually asked to leave a pub by 8 pm (when they were going to open the dance floor) because I had flip flops on. Not the nice sandals with a possible small heel, the old fashioned thongs, jandals, etc. Make sure you have some shoes you can get away with too!

And the places with the harshest dress codes usually charge a cover - what backpacker would want to pay just to set foot in some place?!!

Peace.
