If you go beyond Cairns, take a trip through Atherton tablelands and stay at the "on the Wallaby" hostel, in Yungaburra. It's a great place. the staff is very friendly and organises plenty of activities throughout the day and night, like the great night canoe trip. They also organise a BBQ dinner every night, evrybody sharing the BBQ sits together at one big table, it's the best way to get to know your fellow travellers. They've restored the place, so it is set up in an old queenslander but is great inside. The only downside is that everything has a cost and we ended up spending a bit there, but it was so worth it.

I guess you get what you pay for! I´m always up for meeting other travelers and having good times in a setting like that.
