it is ages ago and probably changed, but when i visited newzealand in 1994 I was shocked of this hostel. the reception was friendly, but they had a kitchen hand who obviously hated backpackers. he shouted at us, accused us... everyone was really scared and we tried to rush at our breakfast just to be ready to leave the room when he arrived. one evening in the kitchen he asked me if I knew the meal he just prepared. no. he got mad then: what was I doing if I am not interested in his country, we are all soooo ignorant and stupid...
I simply asked him if he knew some typical dishes of my country. that was the first I could have done. now I was his target. needless to say that after only 1 more day I left.
