Thumbs up

Hi y'all, new forum member here. I'm about to take a 6 day trip from SK over to Japan. The ferry will drop me in Fukuoka city, and then I'm on my own. I'm not poor but am frugal and want to limit my budget.

The travel agent here tried to sell me a 1-week rail pass. It sounds like a good idea but the question is... how much is it worth? Is 300,000 won a fair price (about US$300) or is it cheaper to just buy it in Japan? How much would say a normal round trip ticket from Fukuoka to Tokyo cost if that's going to be my only destination?

OK, now that the money question is out of the way, go ahead and tell me all the fun things I should do and see in japan in the wintertime!

Hi! I live in Japan now so I can answer a couple of questions...the rail pass is definitely a good idea if you are going to do any sort of moving around here. The local trains are cheap but take forever, the fast trains are incredibly fast, but cost a fortune. Those passes that you can buy for about 300 bucks aren't available in Japan so you should get it in SK. It will probably pay for itself in one round trip Fukuoka to Tokyo.

I don't know a whole lot about the South of Japan because I'm pretty far North in Sendai. Depends on what you're into I guess. Tokyo is a must see if you're into big cities, but for sightseeing there are loads of other, better places.

Hope that helps!

Thanks for the tips. I'm definitely going to get the rail pass. I suppose the best way to make this thread useful to others is to focus on Japan in wintertime. My LP guidebook (the new one) only has a couple of pictures that have snow in them... i get the feeling the writers didn't even visit in winter. What's especially fun this time of year?

Like I said, I don't know a lot about the South, but it doesn't get FREAKING cold down there like it does up here. I just looked at a map and I don't even think it snows down there..

There are lots of little festivals around the year so if you ask a visitors center when you get here they can probably tell you if there is one near you. Definitely worth checking out. Most cities have GREAT visitors centers to help you out.

You must check out an onsen (hot spring) while you are here. There are lots of them everywhere in Japan, but the are where you will be is especially famous for them. You can actually get buried in hot sand up to your neck somewhere in that area. sounds cool to me.
