Thumbs up

Alright y'all,
I am in the beginning stages of packing up my life and travelling around SE Asia and the South Pacific for as long as humanly possibly. However, I have NO IDEA where to start! I met someone in Morocco who told me all about the need for visas and how much money I would need, but one thing I didnt get was what city is the cheapest to fly into???

Some help would be terribly appreciated!!

Well, honestly, that can change by the year, month and even day! Airlines start up and fail, open new cities, have sales and so on. So, I would check out the websites of the major carriers plus the newer, low-cost ones. You can even sign up for a daily/weekly/monthly e-mail bulletin with their sales and special fares. I get about a dozen various travel-related e-mails per day, including one I saw on Prague for $399 including 4 nights hotel that I will forward to the Boards, today.

Depending on your needs, a couple carriers do something called the All Asia Pass, or similar. For one price, you get unlimited travel to where they fly. I know that in the past, Garuda (Indonesian) Airlines, Cathay Pacific and I think Malaysian Air has offered this, so definitely check their sites.

All that said, Bangkok is a good city to find budget airfares.

Good luck, and feel free to ask more specifics...

Bangkok is a very good hub to fly into for traveling around SEA. Thailand is very centrally located within the region. There are many discount airlines that fly from there to get you around Thailand and also to the rest of Asia. A good one is Air Asia. They have cheap flights around Thailand and you can also fly to Malaysia, Cambodia and Vietnam (Hanoi) with them. Good luck!

I say bangkok as well. Thailand is a good "first-country" to visit in asia for many reasons. My ticket last year was under 700usd and included a free layover in Japan, plus free time/date changes for up to 6 mos. Good luck!

For us Australians it seems that Bali (Indonesia), Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok are the cheapest destinations to fly into.
