BILL'S TRAVEL TIPS
1.) Always carry small change in Pesos, Coins and 5, 10, 20 and 50
notes. That saves you the annoyance from the very common reply, "sorry
no change".

2.) Ask someone about taxi or jeepney, tricycle fares BEFORE you get
in. Pay and walk away. NEVER ask "How much?" because the price goes
up. A MOVING Taxi is too busy working so it's a better, more honest
taxi and a parked taxi is waiting for victim. Tip the taxi driver P10
to P20 to reward him for not hassling you. Good Karma always comes
back to you.

3. ) Never change money on the street nor inside a restaurant. You
will ALWAYS lose and usually almost half your money. These money
change scam artists are VERY good and show that the hand is always
quicker than the eye.

4. ) Never gamble with Filipinos not pool, cards, chess or any game
for money and not even for drinks. It's safer not to gamble. It's one
example in life where when you win you lose and when you lose you
lose.

5. ) Never raise your voice at a Filipino away from your own
neighborhood. Never call a Filipino "STUPID". They are very sensitive
about it. If you do get angry and make the mistake. Please leave the
place as soon as possible .Go Away Fast because you are in more
DANGER than you realize. Filipinos do not like to fight and "fair
fights" are not the custom, "fight to kill" is.

6. ) Forget about the 2 words "WHY" and "SHOULD" or you get constant
headache trying to understand why things happen like they do in places
outside your own country, especially the Philippines. Acceptance is
the preferable attitude. There are too many things for you to
question, so it's better for you not to start. So just relax and enjoy
the positive aspects of your surrroundings with a sense of humor.

7. ) Expect everything to be late and slow. Life stops at LUNCH.
Schedules change and the weather is unpredictable. Telephones,
electricity, and water - sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

8. Never accept drinks, candy, or fruit from strangers, especially
young women, in Manila. In the past few years a few of our guests have
been drugged using the above methods after being met in Rizal Park,
shopping malls, the open markets and even on the bus. We have never
heard about this happening in other parts of the Philippines.

9.) Always wear a cloth type money belt which is worn around your waist under your clothes instead of those leather or vinyl pouch waist bags with several zippered pockets because psychologically they appear as you are advertising your valuables. It may seem a bit awkward to reach under the edge of your pants to get your money or travelers checks at a bank but it's MUCH SAFER. Even when you drink or otherwise indulge too much your money is much safer near your - - - -

10.) Don't WORRY, BE HAPPY :-)
We have these posted on the wall of our small hotel / hostel near the Manila airports but you could apply them them to many other undeveloped countries as well.

Hey Dio, I want still images of you in a future Girls Gone Wild video Now, that will sure be on the Travelpunk site!

I agree with Dio´s assesment of your site PhilBill. You do have an extensive site on the PI. I´ll link it on the next update(whenever Í can find some time , hopefully soon).

Your top ten tips on the PI look great! Added to that, if you want to get someone´s attention, you fully extend your lips out and go "ssssshhhht" (kinda sounds like shit without the "i" ) That should do the trick.

And, with a filipino admin running these boards...everyone pay close attention to #5! :D :P

that's a pretty strong list of tips you got there Phil..
hmmm.. okay, i have to admit i kinda felt offended but then there's part of me that's saying that this is really happening in the philippines (well for most underdeveloped countries as mentioned)... and it's saddens me..
reality bites..

but i hope that people who get to read this thread will not thinks that us filipinos are just war-freaks....born to kill!!! we are the exact opposite.. in fact, it has been said that we are known to be one of the most hospitable people... of course, there will always be exceptions.. but they are just a minority...

philippines is blessed with beautiful beaches (i like boracay the best!!) ... the manila nightlife is great!! oh yeah!! we know how to party!!!! people are friendly and accomodating.. you should come and visit us and experience it first hand...

phil, your site is great.. really extensive!! i'm sure evryone planning to go the phils will benefit from it..

p!noY, You can travel to any country that is "third world", or has be oppressed by it goverment, or do not have funding like other countries, And I will bet you that those will be the most hospitable, the most fun people, the people most eagar to help. I will use Cuba as a reference, not once was I treated poorly, not once was I turned away from somewhere, not once was I involved in any kinda confrintation with a local..When I needed help, there was someone there. I will also make a reference to Afghanistan, my friend a Canadian Soldier just got back from a tour there, he said dispite what these people have been through, they are so nice and happy to help when its needed, we was amazed He enjoyed the people so much, He will be going back as a aid worker in 2 months. Peoples kindness does not come from being in a "rich" country, personaly I think that makes us worse off. I would travel to your country in a second, and absorb everything your culture has to offer, You know who talks bad about a certain place, people who are un happy in there own lives, people who have been spoiled by western values, people who look down on opthers for what they don't have and not what they have to offer.

You must realise, that here, people are not thinking that way, we are not some fat cat on a business trip who doesn't want to be there in the first place, nor are we a seniors tour group more concerned about getting out nightly prune juice than seeing everything your country has to offer. Us, and every budget trav'la out there goes to see what really makes you country work, people, places, little nooks and crannies that regular trav'las would never see, or dare to look for.

Do not be so concerned about what people think about your country my friend, you just do you part in making sure that the people who are making a trek there have the help they need to get though it!!!

Buck up my friend and give people a reason to go to your country, and remeber bad things happen everywhere, not just where you come from. This list can be applied to almost any country in the world, not just underdeveloped ones.

Lol, how did you find this out - thru personal experience? Is there a bigger story behind this?
Although, I think this advice would surely apply to many foreign countries, not just the P.I., lol! As a tourist, generally not wise to be raising your voice at and calling the locals "STUPID," a hunch tells me some might just get a bit offended?

Okay here's a TRAVEL TIP LIST for the USA

1. Never raise your voice nor make any aggressive movements with any part of your body pointed at other drivers when driving in bumper to bumper traffic. Americans own and carry more hand guns than any citizen on earth except maybe Afghanistan or Pakistan and ROAD RAGE is NOT uncommon.

2. If you need to work remember that whatever salary an employer claims to offer you when your paycheck comes it will be seriously short due to the tax deductions and other charges.

3. When checking out various tourist related activities or sightseeing trips remember the price seems NOT to be mentioned and the American "helping" you will make you feel tacky should you want to know the price. Also be sure to use words like "compensation, funds", renumeration and costs" instead of asking "how much?" or mentioning the word, "money". It's just NOT done.

4. Don't rent an apartment or house for long periods without going to work daily because all of your American neighbors will be tempted to SNITCH and start calling into shows like "America's Most Wanted" and the local enforcement authorities that you MUST BE some kind of criminal because you don't work.

5. Don't speak your own language in front of English speaking Americans because they are SO PARANOID ( and often ignorant ) that they will think ( KNOW) you are talking about them in some kind of negative way.

6. Be careful speaking your mind about America's foreign policy nor its military around the world or especially ANY negative comments because Americans are EXTREMELY SELF RIGHTEOUS fand fancy themselves and the USA as the GUIDING LIGHT TO PROSPERITY AND FREEDOM. Otherwise, be prepared for either violence or being snitched on to the local authorities that you could be a "TERRORIST SYMPATHIZER". ( Don't forget those expensive government advertisements last year which accused marijuana users as supporters of terrorism )

7. Be VERY careful about making ANY comments about overweight issues since 50% of Americans are overweight enough to be considered obese. After all, there's no reason to reserve all of one's compassion for poverty stricken, starving children overseas; fat people have feelings too and need your tender understanding.

8. Don't be seen carrying too many U$100 bills or using cash to pay for everything because many Americans will suspect you of being a criminal or drug dealer.

9. Follow ALL RULES to the LETTER OF THE LAW in the USA or be prepared to spend a small FORTUNE on legal fees and fines. I'm talking about a SERIOUS LIFE INTERRUPTION that could effect you for TEN YEARS. Remember the USA has the highest number of citizens imprisoned per capita than any country in the world.

10. Do NOT walk along any freeway and most residential streets with a backpack because the local residents will call the police ASAP to investigate and find out who you are and why you are passing though their local community.

So please do not take my tips about the Philippines as negative; I LOVE THE PHILIPPINES and could almost "kiss the ground" each time I arrive at Manila's NAIA.

That "date rape" drug used in the USA violently is a good example fo the difference; in the Philippines nobody is ever attacked violently nor sexually, only robbed. Filipinos, by nature, are VERY PEACEFUL people.
