Hi, I just returned from China and want to share my experience with you. I think you will love Beijing, Shanghai and Suzhou. They are three huge cities but all have a completely different feel and sights to be seen. The Great Wall at a lower more touristy section in Beijing, Shanghai is an important centre of commerce and finance. Suzhou is fantastic-you will also love the beautiful largest fresh lake. The hotels I booked were so good while I was searching information of China and discovered a website. My tour was a fantastic experience – I hope you enjoy yours too!

I was going to delete the thread but why not hijack it from the spammer, anyone in China at the moment (maybe Jason?). Any first hand accounts from Beijing would be pretty cool

Anyone else looking forward to the olympics? Anyone else conflicted between wishing for Olympic success for the Chinese people but still hoping for a gold medal in schadenfreude with massive protests against the communist government?

When I was there in March, the people were very excited about the Olympics. Wish I had the cash to go back around now to see how it's changed so close to the Olympics. A lot of construction and renovations were taking place... I guess to accommodate the influx of people visiting...

baaahaahahahaha i couldnt help myself, i clicked the link and just spent 15mins on the spam website learning all about spam products lol what a crack up website!! ive never eaten the stuff, but who knew- its ham AND pork!!! lol

as for china, i girl from work came back from Beijing last week, she said she had to give up smoking to go cos it was so smoggy.haha she didnt say much else tbh, she hates it there apparently. personally, i cant wait to go!!

YES YES and YES.

First of all, its ridiculous how the IOC listened to all these promises from the Chinese government years ago (such as uncensored web access for the foreign media) and won't call them on it now that its not happening. Same thing with human rights abuses...not that we in America can complain while we have military tribunals making a mockery of the Constitution with these Gitmo trials (my personal favorite is that they've already said if Hamdan is acquitted they're still going to keep him in confinement...riiiiiiight).

I'm going to stop because starting a political/idealogical debate isn't a good idea here.

But I am very excited about the Olympics and plan on watching as much as possibled. Go USA!

I totally agree with Joe (or at least I did after I found out what Schadenfreude was)

I've been completely unenthusiastic about this Olympics for the reasons stated above (I'm going to skip the political debate as well) I'm sure once it starts though my green and gold patriotism will take over and I'll enjoy having sport on the telly non stop.

Yeah, Jess, I think seeing the coverage will make me stoked to go also. I'll skip out on the political discussion as well except to say the problem with cutting moral corners is that it makes it tougher to take a freer-than-thou position*. China compared their censorship of Falung Gong, Tibet, Human Rights reports to the US not allowing gambling on the web and Western European nations not allowing anything that remotely resembles proNazi speech.

Anyway, go USA!

*Just to clarify, I don't equate either action of the US or the West with what China is doing. They are deliberately trying to conceal their past and present mistakes from their population. No one is stopping Americans from learning about gambling nor Europeans from learning about holocaust denial (although, the latter is a bit fuzzier).

^^Registration to the boards is set up so that a "real person" needs to activate the account. So yep, someone does go around sites to post spams. What a rewarding job...

The part that I edited from billy's post is the signature, which included links/ads.

I like how you think Joe - only saw this now. But come to think of it, I don't think I posted how my 2008 summer trip was!

First hand accounts:

Beijing:

Its a clean, friendly and warm city. Mind you that when I went was a few days before the opening ceremonies, and they hired like 5 street cleaners for every single corner and banned spitting, so it was Beijing at its best.

My hostel was in a little maze of hutongs (alleyways) just south of the forbidden city where in the mornings you can get a great meal of fresh steamed buns, pickled veggies and tea for a few dollars. The area was obviously set up for tourists, but retained its authenticity - elders playing badminton at 5am, families sitting outside for dinner in front of their stores, the sounds of locals playing mahjong all night.

I took a backpacker's bus to do the 10km hike from Jingshanling to Simatai sections of the wall. There were no other tourists, and the wall was decayed at some parts. The view was amazing, and many sections of the wall ascended into the clouds (it rained that day, and clouds were low). At the end you can take a zip-line down from the wall, over this gigantic reservoir to the bottom, where a boat takes you to a restaurant. It was awesome.

My best memories of Beijing was renting a bike and biking for like 6 hours through different parts of the city - the city is pretty much dominated by bikes. There's this district up near Beihai park called "houhai" which is by a river with lots of bars and live music. Lots of locals go there, as well as tourists... much better than the more expat oriented Salitun district. By the way, the live rock music in Beijing is some of the best in Asia, in my opinion, better than all the commercial Taiwanese and HK crap.

And of course who could forget the fried scorpions at the Night Market... I didn't eat any, but I did eat a June bug, and have it thorax explode with creamy nastiness =)
