tonight i heard the big one is due to arrive in the next 2 weeks. ive searched on the nect and cant seem to find out if this is true or not. but either way, getting a bit scared now.

im due to leave dec 6, but now im thinking maybe i should leave sooner.

im a bit lost too, cos lack of cash, i want to go somewhere close and cheap, ie korea, china, nepal? stressing a bit cos im not too sure if i should waste so much money on a trip, when nothing could even happen. i mean someones always predicting somethign bad, and if ya believed all of it youd never leave your house! and the way i looked at it was that even if it didnt hit, at least i got a good holiday away out of it?!

should i go or stay and hope for the best?? i have about 2 days to figure this one out

thanks heaps

They've been predicting "The Big One" around here for years. About 15 years ago, a bunch of scared parents pulled their kids out of school for an entire week because they were convinced it was going to hit. Needless to say, it never did.

On the other hand, if you want to get out because you're running low on cash, well... I say go for it.

Living in earthquake country (survived SF '89 and LA '94, California's 2 "big ones") and being a descendent of Japanese earthquake surfers, I can tell you one thing: EARTHQUAKES CANNOT BE PREDICTED, especially down to a "within two weeks" scenario. Unless of course the last EQ in Japan has triggered something in the same faultline and will inevitably lead up to Tokyo, but somehow I'd be doubtful.

Anyhoo, yeah, go with what SV said - if it's a lack of cash or change of scenery motivating you, go for it. But don't be afraid of the big, bad ground shaking. They're virtually impossible to predict, Tokyo has some of the best EQ countermeasures ever engineered, and hell, riding out one of those fuqqers and surviving makes for great stories for the grandkids

Yea I dunno, color me skeptical, but I think earthquake prediction is still pretty sketchy at best today. So, I'm not sure how accurate any prediction might be. I just don't think the science is at that level yet.

And if it were really that serious, it seems you might hear about it on international news or the Net, too, no? But, I didn't see anything, either. Was this an actual government warning or what?

But, if anything were to happen, just remember the "triangle of life." Some claim this guy has inflated his credentials, but his theory at least still seems to make some sense to me. In short, for example, it'd be statistically safer to lay down right NEXT to a bed rather than UNDER it (where you'd possibly get crushed as it absorbs the load and gets flattened like a "crumple zone"). Although the safest place is probably out in an open field away from any tall buildings - if you can get to it.

Exploding myths about earthquake survival tips?

Fortunately, as a packer, you should already have most of these emergency supplies on-hand.

There's probably no absolute right or wrong rules - just use your best judgment in the situation. Use the Force, Leia!

yeah, just spent about an hour searching, and still no other info on it happening....maybe its just typical word of mouth that gets around? then again, if they DID know, theyd not tell us publically anyways, cos imagine the mass hysteria of 11million people (or whatever it is)

as for cash,im cool. just wanted to go somewhere cheap to save $$$

ill check out the travel agents tomorrow still, cos im getting kinda sick of it all too....

thanks for help guys
