Need some help with transport
Well guys, i haven't been on here in a while (since the last trip to Europe), so it's good to be back.:D Well i'm heading out to asia next summer for 3 months and i was needing some help with finding the cheapest way to get over there and to get around. I'm gonna be going all over the place (japan, china, malaysia, thailand, phillipines, indonesia, cambodia), so i was wondering whats the cheapest way to get around over there, comfort in not necessary. also was planning to be flying into tokyo and flying out of bali, so i was wondering if you guys had some ideas for some cheap airlines to get over there. so far the cheapest i've found have been for around $1200-$1300 usd. im head out mid-may and back in mid-august. Thx for any help t-punks!

Here's what I used most:
China - trains (they go everywhere!)
Malaysia - buses
Cambodia - buses/tuk tuks
and combinations of tuk tuks, jeepneys, ferries and the like.
and airasia.com for cheap flights within SEA.
That's a LOT of ground to be covering in three months though, think you wanna narrow that down a little?

Welcome back here !
As far as price goes, ask travel agencies to compare rates for a return ticket to one destination, from where you'll fly around the continent and get back to return home (usually to Malaysia or Thailand have the best prices), and for a ticket entering in one destination-flying out from another. The lattest may not be that more expensive if you can find something with the same airline (try Thai airline or Malaysia Airline).
I also agree with Hwei/Freespiritz on the number of countries you intend to visit. You'll find out once in Asia how ineffecient the transport is. One has no choice but to slow down the pace, and the local transport in the islands will be even more difficult ! But the good news is that all means of transport are spectacular cheap (except Japan) !

Yeah, you can get some pretty sweet deals to Asia from Cali. To China, maybe? The other major hubs in SEA would be Bangkok, KL and Singapore.
I spent three months in just China and that wasn't enough to see everything.
