Exclamation Turkey and the Caucuses June-July ‘07

Hey guys just wanted to get your opinion. Me and a friend are headed out to the Caucuses on the 30th of May. We plan to roam around Georgia and Armenia for a month. Then make our way thru Turkey ending up in Athens where we would fly home. But there’s a problem …..Turkey’s heated elections have been moved up to July. There are rumors of a coup. Thus I am very nervous.
Should we just skip Turkey? Do ya’ll think its that sever?
Anyone been to The Caucuses any suggestions?
If we do go thru Turkey any info on the eastern half of the country…safety, places to see?
FYI everything check out fine before we booked our tickets….lol
Thanks, Sandy

I wouldn't worry about that...it's one of those things that you can never, never anticipate. They'll always be rumors of coups in various countries, even in relatively stable ones like Turkey. I think there is also a chance the military is doing that as a way to scare off or dissuade the Islamic Party from doing anything they consider rash...

Unlikely there will be a coup... AKP already withdrew their head candidate (who wasn't that much of an Islamist anyway). AKP is not a hardline party that will push for their way... I think it will be fine. At least I hope so, i will be there in June. =)

I don't know if it's worth saying (because you're just about to go), but why don't you contact the embassy ? They keep up-to-date infos.

Smile thanks

We’re just gonna play it by ear once were there. Plus I think we’ll be out of Turkey just before the election. Just a few more hours and we’ll be on our way to Georgia. Thanks for your suggestions.
