There's 3 of us going out to Thailand in mid-October for two months and I have a few quetions/queries that I would like some advice on please?

We are looking to go up to Chang Mai to do a Jungle Trek but I have to admit i'm carrying a few pounds (cough) and out of shape! Is it viable for us still to do one?? As I really, really do want to do this before we go down to the Islands!!

Is Koh Samui really as bad as everyone makes out? For you Brits on here, I have heard it being described as the Benidorm of Thailand?

Do I need to book accomodation in advance for the Full Moon parties? I have been given a name of a place on Koh Phangan but quite fancy doing the trip over by speedboat from Koh Samui for the FMP as I hear the view is sensational?

What are the average temperatures for October/November and does it vary from North to South Thailand etc.? Remember i'm a pasty white Englishman!!

I'm sure they'll be others as these get answered!!

Thanks in advance (11 weeks today - bring it on!!)

clicked the wrong button i think...

anyway

havnt done the trek, but from what i learnt over there last time they are mainly a tourist trap, but there are different ones so if u really want to do one there will be a choice of which one suits your fitness level.

koh samui u will always get mixed ideas, my advice - since your going to the FMP on phangnan you wont miss anything not going to samui. dont book, but might be an idea to get there a day or 2 early to settle in.

temperature is always warm over there, ive never needed a jumper or long pants.
thongs and shorts are the go everywhere, including for night life.

check out pattaya beach if ur into partying

Cheers Jeza!!

To be honest i'm going to do one of the jungle treks no matter what (and anyway it'll be good for me) as I don't want to spend the whole 2 months just getting drunk and having a laugh!!!

Yeah I keep getting mixed info on Samui but i'll think i'll duck my head in for a few days just to say that I have been there and done that but I quite fancy seeing a bit more of the country rather than just loads of pissed up westerners drinking in British bars and watching sky sports!!! I can do that back here!!!

Ha ha I think i'll give the thongs a miss but shorts and t-shirts it is then!! Good as long as its not absolutely roasting at that time of the year then I should be alright!

Yeah i'ver heard Pattaya is well worth a visit!!

So can you buy decent shorts/t-shirts out there or is it better to take them with you?? Obviously i'll take a couple of pairs but would rather travel light and buy them there if possible!!

And any sights/history that you recommend? Oh and more importantly and bars/nightclubs/go-go bars that are a must??

The temps in the mountains outside of Chiang Mai can be cool in the winter time - I was there in January last year and it was very cool in the mornings. October/November, though, are on the edge and so you shouldn't see temps much below 17-20 degrees C. In December, January you can see temps down to 14 or even lower in higher elevations. You may want to consider one long sleave shirt and pants just in case. Enjoy - Thailand is great!!

Samui is not for everyone but you might as well check it out. Keep an eye on the weather when you take the speedboat to Koh Phangan. They pack people in even in bad weather and those things capsize sometimes. Nothing to be super paranoid about, but keep your eyes open and if see something you don't like, go with your gut.

theres plenty of clothes to buy....i took all the stuff i needed though so didnt worry about shopping till the end. but u can get away with not taking much no worries...rip off brand name shirts like diesel, ralph polos etc will only cost u around the 200-300bart mark each.

i really recommend going to cambodia while your there, its so cheap and easy to get to nowdays ( i left from pattaya, but bangkok is just the same)... that was better than any cultural experence i had in thailand. i only allowed 4 days (2 per city) which was great but really should have spent more... phnom penh is a crazy place, plenty to do

phi phi is worth a visit if u make it to the phuket side

as for bangkok nightlife, stay away from patpong (espically if ur going to pattaya), kao san is just tourists, i liked nana the best for bangkok nana hotel nightclub is pretty wild hehe, they normally easy to find, no others really stuck out as must gos except for some of the ones in pattaya....if u go to phnom penh let me know if go a few good clubs to go to there

"might give the thongs a miss!"

Thongs are flip flops to us, by the way. I got very confused the first time i heard them being called thongs as well. Flip flops, or other slip on sandals, are mucho needed here as everywhere requires you to take your shoes off!!!!!!!! (it gets very annoying after a while, seeing as my sandals are probably much cleaner than my feet)

Also, i too am not in the best of shape and i've just come back from doing a day trek in the jungle. It wasn't the easiest thing i've ever done but by no way the hardest. Because it's the rainy season here there's very few tourists so you didn't feel like cattle being herded, however, part of our way was blocked because of the rain so didn't get the full experience, but was great anyway, would thoroughly recomend it!
