On Beijing not so much as I only spent a day there and did not really see much. On China...well I spent 6 weeks in north east China. I can tell you its like nothing you will ever see in the west. Its crazy. Just remember to be careful when drinking the water and make sure your food is cooked right. Enjoy Beijing though!

Haha so true WWM!
Well, I too may be in China in August/September - teaching, but of course. Starting in Beijing, though I'm not sure if I'll be teaching in Beijing or in another city? Anyhow, if it works out, we'll have to have a China meetup!

so who is likely to be in china/beijing around mid-july??? cos i'm in hong kong at th mo, and will spend a month in the country, maybe getting to beijing about the 15th would be cool to hear some fluent chinese from adam the cultured!
i'm just on my way to get my visa sorted, so made sure i had a shave this morning! small question- is it cheaper to get into guangzhou first and buy a train ticket to shanghai/ guilian or get it in hong kong???

I was in China in March and loved Beijing. I recommend Leo Hostel; walking distance to the Forbidden City and other temples.
I also highly recommend the Summer Palace and a few other temples of which I will have to look up the names.
Wow, didn't know so many tpunks were headed to China! You'll love it!

i'm in china right now- in yangshou. i recommend anyone to come here, closest thing to paradise, etc, etc! been on the hard sleepers from hk to guangzhou to guilin.....not exactly backpacker places but cool intheir own way. beer and fags are 25p i love it! but they know how to try and scam you as well so be wary (in guilin).....and snakes on the menu as well!
i'll be in beijing about 15th july so might 'bump' into a few people in time for the end of the world cup.

HA Im surprised I am remembered by some here, U2 you stayed at the LEO? I was gonna stay there but I found out I can stay at Tsinghua earlier than I thought so I dont need it but I may stay there for a few days after my program ends. Anyone been to Shanxi? or heard of Jingle county in Shanxi? thats where ill be stationed in my program, It is supposedly a really poor rural area which sounds like such a cool thing to me to experience but I wish i could find even a little info on it.....

can't say that I've heard of Jingle county....but you mite look in the Lonely Planet book and on their website, which you can get uptodate info that's more accurate than the book.
as for meeting up, I'm in Shanghai right now but after about 5 days I believe I've seen enough of what this city has to offer...i was thinking of either looking for a part time job or getting outta here to visit some other town...anyone have any suggestions??? I'm open to meeting up anywhere as well.
