When I crashed a moped in greece and was hauling my junk/bike off the road a german couple stopped. The man drove me around looking for a doctor, while the woman stayed with my bike and made sure no one stole it. Even though I could tell the man really just wanted to dump me off @ the first town, doctor or no doctor he did end up taking me to a doctor in the end and bringing my bike back to me, which was incredibly helpful, seeing as I was a lot more banged up than I thought I was. But there were tons of helpful people while I was traveling. Everyone I met pretty much helped me with directions or did small thoughtful things for me, it was nice. Only a couple times did I run into dick heads...

These posts are what travelling is all about and i've loved reading them all. There is little doubt that it is we who need (and can often offer) support whilst on the move, and i notice how most of us can tell more than a few tales of random kindness, probably because it happens all the time. No matter how worthless, petty, spiteful and nasty life can seem, its these little moments that laugh away and make small any negative thoughts.......Sorry to go on, but this page really to me is what makes life so good.

I've received (and given i hope!) many acts of random kindness, but one sticks out in my mind. I was on the streets of moscow at three in the morning very drunk and without any idea how i might get to the airport to make my flight. I asked a couple who were drinking next to a block of flats if they could give me a light, and they realised immediately that my broken russian meant i was a tourist (and whats more a very pissed one at that.......they said it was dangerous, i disagreed). They spoke no english but found my thorough knowledge of russian swearing hilarious and invited me into their flat. They cooked me bacon and eggs, gave me a beer, and a demonstration of how to use a knife in hand to hand combat (that part scared me a little!, but the guy was a soldier). After that they assisted me in flagging down a cab, and haggled the guy down to a reasonable price. I hope one day i can return the favour!

these stoies are great

while in tokyo, i was pissed walking home from work,i was standing at the lights waiting to cross when this guy comes up to me saying something in japanese and pointing with a 'down' motion. i had no idea what he was on about (might have been the drunken-ness or i really didnt understand!) he pointed at my ass and said 'money' ah ha. turn around, look down....i had close to a grand in notes ready to fall out of my back pocket. someone could have easily just stolen it, but instead i was helped

and a me helping others story...i was in new zealand one nght waiting for a local bus, when a homeless guy sits next to me at a bus stop.we started chatting, his name was tasman and had been homeless for years, my bus came and he asked for a hug. i thought "what the hell" and hugged him. he started crying a little and said that was his first hug in years. poor bugger. but i had to get the bus.....a week later i see him again, i was in a hurry but brought him a burger. his face lit up it was awesome. i never seen him again after that.

Lucky!

Here's one that comes to mind,

My friends and I took a daytrip to Crystal River (just north of Tampa/Hommasassa Springs) for some fising/canoeing. We had a full day of fishing, paddleing, drinking, eating, and were all feeling pretty beat. After a short rest, my buddy Breon talked us in to canoeing out to the channel (the bay) to check out the manatees. So we paddle out, against a monster current, and come across a family of manatees. We took pictures w/ them and everyone was thanking Breon for his insistance to venture further. By this time we've drifted pretty far and I'm starting to rerun those "local fisherman" stories in my head that are so popular on the local news stations like "two young fisherman drowned of the coast of..." or "and today, out of the zainy file, five men were clinging to a dingy 30 miles west of..." The rain started in as well and despite our efforts, we were drifting even faster into the open water. We were basically fucked!

Then a boat appears and throws us a rope. We couldn't even hear the guy on the boat with all the rain and waves that were begining to flood my canoe. So he begins to tow us in and we're all thanking God for this magic boat appearing when out of completely nowhere a dolphin jumps super high (seaworld style) next to our canoe. We were all fucking speechless. I've seen and swam/fished next to a few dolphins/manatees but have never seen any jump like this little guy. Then we notice about 5/6 more dolphins...they were following us back to the inlet! As we turned into the channel the rain subsided and the sun was setting over these huge cypress tress w/ a brilliant orange and purple striation. So we climb out into this guys yard, thank him, and he invites us to his grouper fry!

I know what your thinking. When do his virgin daughters serve cold beer from a golden tap? Despite the missing virgins, it was a pretty awesome thing to do.

Maybe that's why I always help people in need while I'm traveling? (self-realization taking place as we speak)

Left backpack on bus from San Gimignano to Poggibonsi on way to Siena. Had absolutely everything in it. Some incredibly nice person looked in it, found itinerary, called our hotel in Siena, and left backpack at police station in San G. Whoever you are, if you are out there, bless you bless you bless you.

When I was painting in the evening at Erice an Italian town on a mountain the tram that brought me up the mountain stopped running. Not until it was after dark did I find this out and just went into a hotel with my shabby clothes and wet paintbrushes. I explained my dilemna and the person at the desk went and asked people that were having dinner if they could give someone a ride down the mountain later and they said yes. This person was on a scooter and it started to rain as we walked out of the hotel and he said it would be cold on the ride. As we got down to the parking lot there was someone with a car heading down as well that let me ride with them. They drove me all the way to the street I needed to be dropped off at.
