Photo Exhibit!

I know this is totally narcissistic, but I wanted to share because I've been in a mega-rut lately:

I entered a "Cultural Ambassadors" photo contest at the University where I currently work (and attended, twice, and will also probably hang myself once I find some sturdy rafters) and one of my photos got selected for the exhibit and contest! I'm stoked because they'll be up for graduation, so if I decide to pay for the damn regalia and anybody I know bothers to come to the ceremony, I'll be able to show off my pictures!

So I'm off to a little opening ceremony reception next Monday afternoon where I'll see the other entries and find out which one of mine got accepted. Sigh, this does not solve my dramatic/inconsequential life issues, but it's a pretty awesome distraction, non?

Congratulations!
That's exciting. Once you find out which one got accepted, let us know.. i.e. see!
And what sort of life issues are bothering you? Anything we can help with?

Congrats...

Thanks guys!

Aww, Louse - you're the best. It's just general existential job/relationship blah that all my friends went through when we did undergrad and now I have nobody to commiserate with. And maybe I just want to travel aimlessly and *not* get a job using the skills I got with my MA, or maybe I want to just move to the West Coast and start fresh, or maybe I just need to get out of my relationship. So you see, it's nothing big at all, so compared to any actual problems, I'm PERFECT!!

I'm eager to see what pic got chosen too...I'll update with thumbnails when I know for sure!

best of luck, i am a little jealous of your mad skills

Congrats! It's always so exciting having artwork displayed. :D

That's awesome!!! :)

Hmm... general existential blah... well, I think it's true that we will regret the things we don't do rather than the things we did. Just remember that having so many choices/ different directions you could take is actually a really great thing!
(I don't particularly like giving people suggestions and advice. Not least of all because if I did, and they followed it, everyone would be moving to a new country and travelling aimlessly and then society would pretty much collapse hahaha!!!)

I suck!! Soo...I gather up half a dozen so friends and work colleagues (a select few, because I just wanted to "share" not brag) and head over to the exhibit. My photos were NOWHERE. I'm embarrassed - both by the fact that I had zip to show my friends AND that a lot of pictures on display were like stuff I've deleted off my camera card before even uploading (so I'm embarrassed that mine weren't considered "as good" as those AND by the fact that my bitter, black heart had that as my initial thought). Buut, these were the three I submitted, and I don't know which might have actually been chosen, or if they just accidentally sent me a "congratulations" email and really none were supposed to be shown:

Blue Mosque in Istanbul at night - the sky was actually black. I used a longer exposure time and didn't digitally alter it at all. In the 8x10 the trees glow purple.

The older Bedouin girl is the one I let play with my camera and take a bunch of "artistic" shots before she insisted I take a picture of her on her own, and then another holding her sister up. The tray in the background is the rocks she was selling to tourists.

This one is darker than it should be (I completely expected this not to be chosen, until I saw that this was an amateur exhibit and nobody was expecting super high resolution). It's at the DC Pride Festival in 2005. The dancer on the left in Mark, a super talented belly dancer who makes me ashamed to call myself woman when he performs.

So, anyway, pity me!!!! I got all excited for NOTHING! (Though I do have an extremely good-natured "WTF?" email out to the woman who sent me the acceptance message.)
