Alright, folks..

I'm leaving on Wednesday for a field school in paleoanthropology. I fly into Nairobi, where we're spending a few days in the beginning and end of the trip but the majority of the time, I'm going to be out on an excavation in the Lake Turkana region which is, from what I hear, one of the most isolated regions in the world.

So, how should I bring my money? Do I want to bring cash and exchange at the airports? Travellers checks? Hope that my ATM card will work in Nairobi and get the bulk of my cash in the beginning of my trip?

Thanks!

I'd find some way of checking to see if you will be able to use credit/check cards. Thats always your best bet

Paleoanthropology?boring! No, im just kidding with you I am also studying Anthropology but am leaning towards to cultural aspect and/or archaeological. but my past roomate in my dorm was from Kenya and he lived in the port city of Mumbassa(sp?) and says it is nice there, so if you get a chance, from his words i recomend checking out the coast.

I'm actually leaning toward archeology, myself. Where do you go to school, or where are you studying?

If you guys are staying in a hotel, check and see if the hotel has a safe where you can store your cash. Or if they cash travelers checks. If they do, then I'd go with that option, unless there is an ATM around. Of course, I wouldn't be surprised if there are no ATMs to simply withdraw money (normally the best option) -- seeing how you said its pretty remote.

Maybe some of the school staff has been there before and can help you, Virginia? Sorry I couldn't be of more help...
