Africa Wilderness with a capital W ! Paradise like landscapes, the Kilimandjaro and the Nile, huts and victorian architecture. Africa is a crossroads of civilizations, the land before time.

Im looking at spending some time in Cameroon, Syria, or Nigeria. Any tips from some fellow backpackers would be a huge help. If i go to Cameroon it will be for backpacking, if to Syria, or Nigeria it would be to volunteer. Any one with anything would be great.

Syria is awesome...although now may not be a good time to go (who knows if the Israel-Hezbollah war may widen to include Syria soon...). You could spend months there and still not see all the world class Ancient and Medieval ruins. However, if you're volunteering, I'm not sure how much time you'll have for sightseeing.

The people are incredibly friendly. Over and over, I was told by Syrians, "We hate George Bush, but we love Americans!" They are incredibly warm and welcoming people. I experienced their kindness time and again in my week there. From helping me find the right bus, to offering tea or food every time I walk into a place, to just sitting down and being willing to chat for hours, I enjoyed my time with the Syrian people.

There's actually a series of books that you might find helpful - even though they're in the juvenile section of the library. Look for the Cultures of the World series, they have Nigeria and Syria, but not Cameroon. Even though they're intended for school projects, and are essentially set up like the projects we used to do when I was in school, they have a lot of general and some in depth information about everything from Geography and History to Lifestyle, Religion and Food. Obviously, also check out specific guide books, but these are easy to read overviews with a fair bit of actual information in them. I'm currently looking at one for Ghana (*future bulletin possible on this subject*).

Hey,
While I have not been to any of the countries you specified, I have traveled in the West Bank - Dakar and the surrounding areas doing medical work with a missionary group for a few weeks in July. It was excruciatingly hot, but one of the most moving and rewarding experiences I have ever had. The people are beautiful, kind, open and warm spirits, and I felt renewed as a human being after being there! Just wanted to say have an amazing time if you do go, and best of luck in your travels - I can't wait to go back one day!
